you got it, one thing that really affects these forms is doing a calculate color values, just to see how the gradient will really effect the whole thing, in the end you'll choose your own colors anyway. Try different symmetries, positive and negative, and play with the xaos (using numbers higher than 1, say 4-10 for example).
You don't have to use cylinder either, try some other variations. You can also adjust the height/width of the cylinders easier by going to the transform tab and changing the numbers in the top and bottom (post transform) boxes

Setting the variation amounts and getting the placement of the xforms just right so as to avoid ghosting can be frustrating as there's no one right way to do it; it all depends on the variation and how well it "plays" with the other variations.

I wish the window was clearer when I am watching the changes I am making. I make it as big as I can get it and still work.

Go into Options menu Display tab and you can adjust the preview quality there.
Also remember that you can adjust the quality of the main window by selecting different Quality values in a drop-down list on the right of the main toolbar.
