Description Ah, it makes it all worthwhile - walking around freezing my ass off and wondering why I'm carrying the wrong lens...then the peacock starts displaying!

...Pity it was displaying to a chicken. Still, marks for effort.

sweet one. Did you knew that if those creatures get ill from albinism cant attract any female, so they can't reproduce?

I didn't, but it doesn't surprise me. I'm guessing the females have adapted to be attracted to the vivid colours, to present them with an albino peacock probably doesn't register as the same species to them.

Atleast it was displaying to something reasonably close to what it should be displaying to, when I got photos of one displaying it was doing it to me.

Yes, though in this case I wanted it to display to me so I could get a wider angle shot without a chicken in the way! But I did see one have a go at displaying to a goat the other day...

Do birds have a rut? Maybe not, but I like the cropping on this!

Well, I suppose in the same way that red deer won't go looking for a fight when they don't have antlers, these guys don't go flapping their scratty stumps at everything with a pulse when they've lost their tails! Does that count as a rut? I suspect it doesn't last as short a time, I think peacocks just display when they feel like it...and when they have a tail!

Thanks, I got some wider angle shots but I prefer this one.

Peacocks lose their tails?? Wow! I never knew that.

All birds (I think) lose their feathers every few months - I think it's about twice a year. They moult gradually, and their old feathers are replaced with shiny new ones! I guess with peacocks, such huge feathers take longer to grow!
