Pink Carnation – Romano

“Ve~ fratello, where are you going?” Feliciano asked me, who is now by the door of the house. I growl and reply him, “It’s none of your business, idiot!” then I go outside, closing the door. I don’t know why but my heart feels uneasy today. I think I have to go for a walk, just to ease my mind.

I walk to the market district and see many people. I walk passing the street as I put my hands on my pockets. Nothing’s special again, I think, but that is until someone screams.

“Help! There’s a pickpocket! He stole my wallet!”

I sigh and look at the person who screams for help then to the pickpocket. Yeah, I know I want something special, but I don’t want this to be that special thing. But one way to distract my mind, maybe to involve myself in this. I slowly and calmly walk to that pickpocket’s direction as he ran toward mine. The helpless man is still screaming for help.

When that pickpocket passes my side, well you know what happens. That idiot doesn’t even realize I had pickpocketed him. “Hm? There’s two?” I look at my hand. Maybe it’s his, but whatever, it’s mine now. I walk to the helpless man and give him his wallet.

“Oh, grazie, ragazzo!” the man says.

“Sì, fate solo attenzione prossima volta,” I say and walk away.

Another time passes and my eyes catch a flower shop and the flowers it displays. I approached it and look around, not really expecting anything. There are too many roses… tulips… and for god’s sake what is this flower? I sigh again and is about to leave when the clerk asks me, “May I help you, sir?”

“Oh, uh… do you have uh.. Carnation flowers?” I ask.

“Yes, we have,” the clerk says and go to collect some colourful flowers and put them to the counter. “These are Carnation. Maybe you have a specific color, sir?”

I look from side to side and finally decide, “The pink ones, please.”

“Pink Carnation, please wait a minute,” she says and go to the back of the shop after picking the flowers. I wait and she comes back with a bouquet of those flowers. I pay the flowers and go outside. Looking at the flowers again, I start to remember about her… about (name).

(name) was… just a girl, an ordinary girl. (name) and I were friends, yeah Feliciano too. We were happy to be in each other’s company. She understood my status and I understood hers. Back then when she was still here, I was still a mafia and she was one of my subordinates.

If only I didn’t careless that time…

“Let her go, bastard!” I barked at the man who held (name) with his arm and a knife on (name)’s throat.

“Heh! Give me the key first! And I’ll set her free!”

I held a key which led to my family’s treasure. My grandfather trusted me with this key, so that no one would ever steal from my family or even knew what’s inside. I gritted my teeth as hard as I could. I was not with my group. Feliciano was. He was still in the battle and I… I ran after this bastard after he caught (name).

The worst thing was that we were in the edge of a cliff. I didn’t know how did we get there but no matter how, it’s worst.

“Come on! It’s give and take, Lovino Vargas.”

I looked at the key. I have to make a really hard decision here. (name) or my family.

“D-Don’t give it! Just kill him already!!” (name) shouted and she struggled but to no avail.

“Shut up, you little bitch!”

I looked at (name). Form her throat now, fresh blood was flowing. I… why did I hesitate to decide? I am the next head of mafia and killing people was my skills. I should be used to see people died, but why?

I looked at the key one last time and to (name) before deciding my final decision. My last decision was… to give the key and get (name) back.

“Alright, if you want the key, then give her back first!” I said.

“Grh! Do you think I’ll fall for that?! Throw it to me, to the ground! And I’ll set her free…” he smirked.

“Shit.”

I threw the key and apparently it landed on the ground just before that bastard. When I slowly approached him to get (name), I saw him smirked even wider. What he did next really shattered my heart. He stabbed her and threw (name) to the cliff.

“Hah! I’ve let her free!” was the last thing he said and ran away with the key.

I didn’t think twice and went to the cliff as fast as I could. I lied and searched for (name). “(name)! (name)!” finally I saw her was still tugging to a branch, but she panted and her hold on the branch wouldn’t last long. “(name), reach my hand! Quick!”

“B-but I can’t—“

“Just do it, damn it! It’s no fucking time to whine! Come on!”

(name) stretched her hand to reach mine. I tried my best to let her reached mine. However, (name) lost all her power and her grab on the branch loosened and she fell to the cold river down there. I lied there, too shocked to speak, too shocked to move. When I finally returned to my senses, I could hear Feliciano’s voice, calling my name.

All I could do back then was crying and told them that it was too late.

And here I am, at the same cliff where I decided the most foolish decision I’ve ever made. I stand by the cliff. I know I can’t turn the time. I know it’s useless to regret of it. Since then, my family was released from mafia status and every of us live like normal people now. It’s not that bad though.

I look at the flowers then the river. “These are your favourite flowers, (name)… the ones which always remind you not to forget.”

I threw the flowers and they fell down to the cold water. “I’ll never forget about you…”

Then I walk home.
