Good capture. Though you really should resize this thing. To around 1024x768 or something.
From the picture itself. I would have focused on the eye of the butterfly But still, this does work. I like the colours and the way those background flowers make a "striking" feel to the pic. Composition is also good.

i dont know much about photography so i cant exactly come up with any critique im afraid. Out of curiosity though, what effect does a 'macro' lens have on the shot?

well, if you were to put a normal camera without macro lens so close to the object (i.e. less than a few centimetres away) it woulld look blurred and yucky. think of the macro lens as a magnifying glass ... it's basically a single sided convex lens.
in other words ... it focuses close objects.
i don't know much about photography either, i just know it looks uber cool ^_^

And by moving its focal point close, it shift the Depth of Field so that the background becomes uber-blurry like in the background of your photo
I get it now

Lovely colours, and I know how technical it can be to capture these critters, nicely done

Welcome and yep, I need to get a proper macro lens, I do have the rings that can be mixed and matched to give different degrees of focus but they can be a little technical to use in terms of focusing

The large images make it harder to look at on a screen and make the dpi lower , Is this little thing in the wild? Or in a butterfly house? Its a subject i wanna get when i get the opertunity.. Maybe a little more focus on the flower? a higher appature to allow a slightly better depth of feild..
Great selection, Great colours. I do like how the background flowers blur and provide random colourings.
