Description
WIP shots... will be scrapped soon. "Firestorm the Dragon" belongs to =Firestormthepoet and is sculpted here under special agreement.Firestorm:
I finally got the preliminary paint put on and experimented with how to make the texture of her knobbly scales. This will be refined, but I have some questions for you.
1. The longest "whisker" on this dragon bead's left cheek got broken. I fixed it, but as you can see from the picture it will never be smooth. Would you like me to make a new version of Firestorm's head and try again?
2. If you want to stick with this one, what do you think of the teeth? I wasn't working from your ink-drawing when sculpting, so I didn't think to model them in, but saw them when the time came to paint. Painted in, they don't look good to me, but I don't want to take them away without your permission, because they are an integral part of your ink drawing.

Oh, come, now... it's not all that fabulous. It'll get better now that I know what to do with the teeth.
*Retrieves your hat from the basement.* *Takes it to the observation deck.* *Dusts it off.* *Sets it on your head at a rakish angle.*

Now I'm ready to paint the town red
Or at the very least a deep auburn
Your too modest,
its more fabulous than a flamboyant drag queen my friend

FANTASTIC! Love the teeth.
To me, the roughness adds character and coolness.like, she's actually real not just a little clay sculputer.
PS. Jespersen says hi. He's right here now with mee

Thank you! And hello back to Jespersen! I hope he's being good.
Unfortunately, the teeth will probably be going away. They don't really work without being in the round... but I'll try to make it so you won't miss them in the next set of pictures.

Wow! SHE LOOKS AWESOME!!! I love it!
The scale texture looks great! The details are just amazing.
The horn (whisker) on the left side looks fine to me. Chalk it up to battle damage.
As far as the teeth go, the two from the upper jaw going down look fine to me. The one on the lower jaw going up looks a little wonky to me. It just kinda looks like a white mark (sorry)
But other than that, she looks awesome! Thank you so much for doing this.

I completely agree with you on the upper teeth. To my chagrin, the only reason the lower teeth look any better is because I did not photograph them properly... if you look at her chin, they look just the same as the uppers. I'll remove them.
Thanks for the feedback, and I'm so glad you like this so far. Once I improve the paint, I'll post another picture to show you. I'm so glad you like a lot of it so far!

Thank you! I'll post another set of pictures once I get some of the paint done better. The teeth will probably be going away, and I'll refine the scales.

Can't wait to see!
Feel free to totally ignore this, assuming you aren't already doing it or better.. but have you thought about maybe doing a metallic type coating over the paint, or maybe along the edges of the scales? Not sure if they have a clear metallic type paint to go over a base, or if they have a metallic red that shade, but it'd add some depth to the red color and really bring out the three dimensional feel to the scales that a solid color has a harder time doing. (Ok, I admit it... I just like shiny stuff. )

Believe it or not, every paint on here except for the black and the white is metal-flecked. The camera doesn't pick that up well unless I turn on the flash, a loathsome thing that no white balance setting compensates against properly.
I've been trying to find something smooth-metallic, like you suggest, because that's an excellent idea, but the model car paints resist laying on SuperSculpey by going mangy and patchy. An alternative could be a lacquer of some sort... can you recommend any? My local art stores prefer to supply for oils, not acrylics.

Believe it or not, I've seen some at Walmart. But if you don't have a Hobby Lobby or sorts around, you could probably order some easily from them online. Craft stores seem to be better places for acrylics. They almost seem to be the red headed bastard child of the pain world. But I like them anyway!

Really? Hmm! I'll have to check out the craft section at the local Walmart, then. Something slightly pearlescent would do well for this application.
I agree with you about acrylics. From what I find, they are the best for painting polymer sculptures. Oils, tempuras, and watercolors are just... wrong for that application.

Aw, thanks! It will be getting better. The scales will look more like scales, the teeth will probably be going away, and I'll do something with making the underside look more like dragonskin. I'll post another progress image later.
