I always wondered how the team got together. How I fancy it happening is the base Richtofen used to experiment on Tank, Nikolai and Takeo wasn't overrun by (Samantha controlled) zombies right away. With the short time he had he needed a fast and easy way to assemble a team that would never rise up against him and more or less just listen to his every command. Plus he needed people who were immune and could hold their own. Since the guys were the only successful super soldiers he personally wiped out their memories of his idenity without the other scientists knowing (No one really knew of the outbreak. Plus he didn't want anyone else to ruin his future plot. He would kill them all anyway regardless.). When his efforts were finally successful, that is when the infection spread throughout the base. Richtofen saw this as an oppertunity to traumatize the other guys with close combat with the undead and gain their trust faster by "saving" their lifes.
Tank would be the first he would recruit, promising to help him regain his memories and getting out of the zombie apocalypse alive. Richtofen even tried being nice in the beginning and later on showed his true nature that cause them to hate each other. It was a huge effort on his part to be nice to any of his former experiement so as soon as everything went to shit and no one could survive without the other he was pretty relieved he could be his normal evil insane self.

I feel like none of that made sense =w= oh well its IMAGINATION

So yeah treyarch owns these dudes and what not.
