I really love the scales around the face, and the crisp, dark intelligence in the eyes.

We used to have a tortoise, a Gopherus agassizi, that we adopted from the California Turtle and Tortoise Club. When we got him, he was in hibernation, and he was in a cardboard box. We put him in the closet and in the spring when he woke, I had forgotten all about him! My cat kept going into the spare bedroom, then would come out and meow at me.
Half a day went by when I finally got the hint and followed the cat into the spare bedroom, where he sat in front of the closet and pawed the door, then meowed. I opened the closet door, and there was the cardboard box, and I could hear the turtle scratching. OMG! I was so excited! I called my son in from playing (he had never seen a desert tortoise in real life that wasn't sleeping ), and called my husband in from the garage and we pulled the tortoise out of the box and let him explore. My cat was FREAKED out! hahaha! I guess the tortoise had no smell from being in hibernation, or something...
As a child, I grew up in the Mojave desert and had several tortoises as temporary pets, as they would wander into our yard and back out, as they wanted to. Some would stay for a day... some for months. My first boyfriend's mom had a clutch of eggs that she kept in the living room under a heat lamp and I got to watch a couple of the tortoises hatch.
So, I was really excited about our adopted tortoise! He lived for quite a few years before dying a natural death.
I so love tortoises.... how they look old, even when they are brand new, how they slowly plod along, determined to get to point B. How quickly they will grab at lettuce or grass with their beak of a mouth, then s l o w l y and methodically chew on the tasty morsel!
Since I grew up with them, I feel like they are part of my childhood, which causes me to have an even deeper fondness for them.
You have captured so well, the tortoise's wise gaze... how they seem to know more than they are able to let us mere humans know. I love his wrinkled neck... his mouth, which is always set at an angle that is half smile, half frown (like they are thinking, "Well? What did you expect, silly human?")
Thanks so much for reminding me of my tortoises! The colors you have used are perfect! I want to rub his little head and watch his eyes close in melting surrender at my touch.

It reminds me that the turtles are the closest thing to cute and cuddly that reptiles ever get.
