Among the main reasons I chose her with no armor was something that was mentioned how difficult it was for her not having any armor.

In the game I played she was running from space pirates after being attacked, and all she had with her was a stun pistol.

After so much shooting in the game before that mission being put into a position where all she could do was run and hide was interesting to me, especially for a game on the game boy advance.
