This image is made with 3dsmax 7 ("final render stage-1" renderer) with some PS adjustments for shadows.A reference to this work is Those were the days... by *Darkwoods (thank you Vera for your beautiful photo
).I'm not very satisfied... but is very hard (for me) to simulate real lights (I have made hundreds of rendering!!)

Gorgeous rendering! I'm a friend of Vera and I was amazed with your reproduction of here photo in 3D.
As to the light, I think you should soften the shadows contour a bit more and make the direct light less "harsh" and white.

You are right about shadows and light.... I can make this work better, but too much tunings on lights tired me.
For my excessive hypercritic I have lots of not ended works.
