I like this place, too.

I had the privilege of visiting Magdeburg in 2005. The Dom blew me away. This huge hulking edifice of stone, seeming almost to be alive, terrifying to someone from a country as young as the U.S. And then we went inside, and there was such peace...

Our tour guide gave us a brief history of Magdeburg while we sat in the courtyard of the Dom, and it was then, hearing all the wars and grief that the Dom has witnessed, the blood spilled and havoc wreaked, the pain that saturates the earth there, that my heart broke, and I seemed to understand why the Dom is the way it is. It was like the outside has been blasted by the fires of hell, but the inside is holier for it.

And yet you somehow manage to make that blackened stone look warm and living.
