Description
I wanted to do something similar to a children's book illustration with some Asian flare. Hope you enjoy!
EDIT
I would have never guessed the amount of positive feedback this deviation has gotten me. Thank you all for taking the time to view, comment, or fave!

Beautiful! I have never seen such elegant rats...or mice, maybe?
From my Japanese point of view, the two mice in front are wearing beautiful kimonos like Juuni-Hitoe (lady costumes of Heian era), so they are nobles, but the third one seems to be wearing workers' clothes from Edo period on top, and usually the color navy blue is used for common clothes for Japanese people, this woman is serving to these two nobles. Am I right?

This is one of the best comments I have gotten on this piece. Thank you so much for the insight, I find it fascinating. The original of this piece was actually done by Warwick Goble. This is a reproduction of his work, "The Espousal of the Rat's Daughter". I've never actually read the story that goes with it, but I think I read it was inspired by Japanese lore. I've always thought the female rat was being wed off, possibly to the more nobly dressed rat? Or maybe being escorted to meet her to-be husband? I'm not sure about the more commonly dressed one. But it makes me want to know more about the story.

Hi there, I am very sorry for the late reply.
I know which story you are talking about, that is about a young female rat/mouse who wants to get married with the Sun. So her father paid a visit to the Sun and asked if he would like to get married with his daughter, the Sun said, "I would love to, but there is a guy who is superier than I am, he is the Cloud." Then her father went to the Cloud's placeย and asked, but the Cloud said, "I appreciate your offer, but there is a guy who is superier than I am, and he is the Wind." Then father rat visited the Wind, andย the Windย said, "The Wall is much more powerful than I am." and then the Wall said, "There is only one guy who can make a hall in my body, and that is..." Now you know whom the girl rat got married with---a yound handsome male rat! ย ใใญใใฟใฎใใใใใ is the title that we call.
It is a Japanese folklore but I do not knowย whichย era it came out---seems to be a ralatively recent one.
And you are right about the girl being married off to her husband's family traditionally. She could wear something like this, a pure whiteย kimono called Shiromuku with a special hat called Tsunokakushi.ย

Firstly, I am terribly sorry for such a late reply after you gave such a wonderful response. School work snuck up on me and I haven't had a lot of time for DA, but I so appreciate you telling me that story. I found so fascinating! My piece means more to me now that I know the story. And In the original there was actually a face in the clouds (probably representative of the wind) but it got cropped off in my version. It makes a lot more sense to me now. Such a cool folklore.ย
I have seen shiromuku before but I didn't associate it with this work probably because of the yellow. They are such gorgeous kimono.ย

Where did you learn to use water color like that?

I was taught at an art academy in my hometown. They had us reproduce work from illustrative masters like Warwick Goble and Arthur Rackham. It was the best classes I've ever taken.

Oh wow, I adore this The colours are very delicate... I love how even though the furthest kimono pretty much "reads" as black, it's not in the least bit harsh.
I'd never heard of Warwick Goble, but just did an image search on his works. Beautiful stuff, thanks for introducing him to me

Thank you so much. This one is still one of my favorites I've ever painted. Warwick really had a way with color and composition. I'm glad I introduced his work to you. He's my all-time favorite illustrator.
I appreciate the comments so much, thanks for the encouragement!

They are such good pets! Much better than any other rodent. They can be trained and recognize you. People always used to be so disgusted when I told them I had rats. Most people just hate the tail
