Description Watercolour and ink on bristol board.

The spark of the idea came from the creativity game Fantasy Genesis. The roll was Dolphin + Horse + Seaweed. This got me thinking of a mermaid leading her merhorses to collect the souls of drowned sailers. In the end I decided I wanted to create a more peaceful and playful image. I hope you like it.

I'm not sure that I'm entirely happy with the horses on the left but I'm scared to work into them any more incase I ruin them. Tell me what you think.

I like the overall pastel shades, the way the horses' heads curve with the wave, and the white patches of foam or light near the mermaid. It's as if that's what the horses are made of, or what they become. And the title, "Twixt Tide and Tides Returning," definitely sounds like an old song or legend.

I've never heard of Fantasy Genesis, but it sounds like the kind of game I'd have loved, too! Is it an electronic or board game?

Thankyou for the comments. I hadn't thought of the foam being what the horses were made from.

Fantasy genesis is a book by Chuck Lukacs. You roll dice to choose from lists of animals, plants etc. Here's a link to the authors blog [link]

If you are interested we have a group here dedicated to the game. The author is a co-founder and we are planning to post challenges that people who don't have the book would be able to join in with too.

I like the way you shaded the water and did the foam, it has a nice yet subtle realistic effect.

The horsewaves remind me of the Lord of the Rings.

Glad you liked it

I don't remember them being mentioned in LOTR, but then I think I was 11 last time I read it. This is based on the british folklore of white horses collecting the souls of drowned sailors.
