Description
Assateague Island, Maryland - the home of the famous wild ponies. However, Assateague was not always intended to be a National Park and Wildlife Refuge. In 1960, development began on the island. A long stretch of road, called the Baltimore Highway, was paved down the length of the island. Trees were cleared at regular intervals to begin making other streets and residential areas. If anyone's been to Ocean City, MD, or any such beach, Assateague was intended to look like THAT. However, in 1965, a horrible storm ripped apart the island and destroyed equipment, roads, and more. The development was abandoned and all machinery was salvaged. Pieces of the highway and street signs remain on the island; the clearings have only begun growing again, and can be sighted through the deeper treelines. 3rd Street remains, but with a bit of pony scat to remind everyone just who owns the island.Digital Olympus camera, touch-ups in PSP.
Shot June 28th, 2005.
