Description
Another project done for school.Four different types of gryphons for the four different wing types.
High lift: Changeable hawk eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus) and asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica).
Elliptical: Sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) and jaguarundi (Puma yaguarondi).
Dynamic soaring: Australian gannet (Morus serrator) and flatheaded cat (Prionailurus planiceps).
High speed: Gryfalcon(Falco rusticolus) and canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis).
I know that there are dozens of similar charts on Deviantart, but it was a great opportunity for me to really delve into bird wings as well as gryphons.

I have a cockatoo/angora cat griffin that I need to start drawing again. Can never get too much data on wings and feathers. This will come in useful for my DracoStryx as well.

The world needs more gryphons
It's quite tricky to get accurate information when it comes to bird wings, I know your struggle.

Another great tutorial about bird wings, keep it up because i find them extremely useful. I especially consider this very important for me because i rarely draw Accipitriformes and they can be tricky for me sometimes. It's a pleasure to admire this^^

Oh gosh, thank you!
I usually find that I personally have the most issues with sea birds, their long, narrow and densely feathered wings prove quite difficult to draw.
From one avian lover to another, do you have any good tutorials/literature on how bird tails function and how their different shapes affect flight?

Hi, sorry for replying late but my math exam keeps me pretty busy. I find sear birds wings tricky too so i can understand, i generally draw a simple geometric shape of the bird wing then i add the details like remiges and coverts.

Speaking of bird tails i have found these interesting links: www.researchgate.net/publicati…

I love that you used a sharp shin! I've done a similar concept, but scaled up -- northern goshawk x mountain lion BEAUTIFUL job!

Provided that someone were to draw Santa's reindeer with wings, which wing type would best suit the need to cover one hemisphere in 12 hours and the other in another 12?

My first though was to go for high lift or dynamic soaring because the reindeer would need to cover vast distances, but this would not work.
To cover the globe in 24 hours you would need to achieve supersonic flight, due to how wings behave at such incredible speeds they have to have a low aspect ratio (this rules out elliptical and high lift wings).
And due to having to maneuver between houses at high speeds, dynamic soaring are ruled out since they can not turn quickly enough to avoid collision.
With this in mind and presuming that the reindeer have to generate their own thrust and thus have to flap constantly, high speed would be the best option.
In short: high speed wings are your best option

In my stories, I use the high lift and high speed for gryphons and hippogryphs, because for a carnivore, no meal can be caught without speed and strength.

Excellent choices.
The elliptical model also offer a lot of speed and maneuverability, but it's more suited to smaller creatures (which gryphons are not).
