As far as Zev was concerned, his mother was as good as dead when he was a child. He was raised knowing he was Zacharias' son - the resemblance was uncanny, despite the notable colour differences. He was raised by a wet-nurse slave who tended him as far as her duties went and even then some. Jodi was as kind as she was allowed to be and treated them no differently from her own litter before they were sold off. She held no sentiment towards her lost litter and treated her master's kits just as well. His father's lady, Harmony, didn't quite seem to know what to make of him. It had been drilled into him that he was worth less than his trueborn siblings, having been the product of an affair - not the first one, at that - but because his mother had left him behind they had to figure out what to do with him.
At a young age, he knew that he could easily get tossed out. Although his father's adulterous ways never ceased, no matter how hysterical with rage Harmony got [ an irony, he later confessed to himself ] and no matter how many kits were borne of his bloodline. Zacharias was wealthy enough to tend to those that he figured was worth it, which was unfortunate when he dabbled with slaves. He sold them off reasonably soon as he figured they wouldn't rise too well in their station. Zev never really bothered to know any of them save for a handful. Soon enough, as he was aging and Harmony begged him to have him be pawned off, he tried to bring himself up in his father's eyes - to become exactly like him in a sense, a loyal cat who would be better off kept within the family. As a bastard to his father he had no real value or worth except for what he could provide.
However, Zacharias' heir, whom had been named for him, had a knack for getting into trouble so it was easy to fall into that gap - to cement himself as notable. He tended to everything he could, but having been born in a higher standing than slaves was treated far, far better. Zacharias eventually began to encourage the behaviour and eventually, when he proved his usefulness to Harmony as a functioning citizen - rather than slave, thank you very much - she consented to those born of affair to live with them.
Zak eventually earned a reputation as a jailbird, one who couldn't exactly "function" as a citizen but was too high of a standing of sorts to be considered being sold off. As a result, Zacharias intended for Zev or Bella to inherit upon his death, and began to groom them as such. The more that Zev molded himself to Grown Vine's expectations and realities the more pleased his family became of him. What he did didn't matter much to him - it was all work and if it made the life easier for fellow citizens, well, all the better,
There came a day when each of Zacharias' recognized kits would earn themselves a slave - they had handled themselves well enough, and those who hadn't turned to livestock keeping and still lived at home were kept in charge of an individual slave for the time being to see how well they handled the responsibility. Addam, another of Zacharias' litter but the only other who had proved himself was due to his adamant skill with letters and numbers and thus bookkeeping, was skittish at the prospect but he handled his well enough. Bella had a tendency to fluctuate between treating them kindly and freaking out over the littlest of mistakes and treated them as such. Zev was given Charlotte as his own for the experiment. She had been older than him but didn't act it and she was very obedient and delivered all her duties without flaw. The only genuine problem with her had been her lisp and her inability to pronounce 'p's, which lead to her calling Zephyr "Young Lord Zev" instead with his permission.
She had been friendly enough and knew her station and did not impose when she was not wanted. They grew as close as people with different stations could get - he would ask her to clean something then ask her about her day then send her off. He treated the other slaves much the same if they pleased him but it had been different because she went out of her way to make sure he was comfortable above all others. Later, he would remark that it was due to her being assigned to him but at the time it had elevated her status enough for him to consider her in a brighter light than other slaves. That was not to say, however, that he didn't treat her like any other slave.
As it were, not all the slaves were happy. Joshua, the one under Zak's watch - for he wished to earn his place by his father once more, the plush life was too great to pass up - , was antsy and hated his post as a slave - he had been a citizen prior and gambled himself into debt and had Zacharias pay it off and in turn he would work under him. Zev never quite did find out what Joshua intended that day but he attempted to flee - and had succeeded. Furious, Zacharias had his children - the trueborn, the accepted, and the bastards - scope the city for him. Joshua was not found. In order not to allow the other slaves to believe that such an action would not go unpunished, instead he turned to the others and watched them for any mistakes. Charlotte had the misfortune of being picked - it had been for a silly thing, Zev would later recall, something that would only require a reprimanding due to any other time but as it had been that time, she had been the one chosen. She did not beg for her life and he did not offer it. She died that day by his own paws.
It was after that incident that Zacharias figured that Zak was not worth it and had him tossed into a cell to contemplate his ways. Zev never did know what became of him but as the days passed the more he became aware of the fact that the thought of freedom was so vile that it corrupted those around them and had them sentenced to death. He knew that the life of a slave was better than death, and if they were treated as fairly as their work, then what was the point of choosing another life?

- Was raised as a bastard to Zacharias and his lady mate. Because his mother abandoned him to them, he was left in their care until old enough to tend to himself.
- Zacharias' mate, Harmony, wanted him out of the house as soon as possible and, because he became accustomed to the life, strove to prove his worth.
- Harmony finally consented to him living with them - namely due to the fact that the heir had a tendency to get into trouble with the law and that Zev was the closest thing to an heir save for a sister.
- His father wanted to teach him about slaves and ensured that they all kept their own for an undetermined amount of time. Her name was Charlotte and due to a lisp had initially given him the nickname Zev - only due to his permission, of course.
- Zak wanted to get in his father's good graces again and Zacharias consented and gave him his own slave. The slave was wily and escaped.
- Zacharias intended for no other slaves to get the same idea so he kept an eye on them, watching for a mistake. Charlotte made a slim error and she paid the price. Because Zev "owned" her, he was the one to kill her.
- Zak was disciplined by being disinherited and tossed into jail. Zev became an unofficial "heir".
- Zev came to the conclusion that because freedom gave thought to free will and disobedience that it was unlawful and that slavery stopped them from getting into trouble.

Zev strives to take after his father in many ways but where his father is critical and ruthless, he is considerate. Zev knows his standing in life - and that of others. He's fair enough to other civilians and would offer idle conversations if they prompt it out of him but he isn't much for talking unless it's something that he's interested in. He's selfish, a habit that he never quite grew out of, but that is more due to not getting the equivalent of his true-born siblings during his youth.
Although he can get easily irritated and his body may express it, he will likely only mutter under his breath and will only voice his opinions if he feels very strongly about them. This has earned disciplinary action, of course, from his father but it didn't do much to other than to fuel spite. He has no problem with authority figures of higher standing than him but he is uncomfortable with being ordered around.
As for his attitude towards slaves, he doesn't particularly care one way or another. If they do well by him - following his orders and take that extra step to ensure comfort and stability in the household - then he's far more likely to hold them in a higher regard than other slaves, regardless if they're a Pretty or not. If they are wandering in the marketplace with him as their guard, he is likely to wander a bit further. If they happen to snatch a couple things from their shopping list for themselves he would pretend to be none the wiser.
He's also content with helping them carry things around - only specific for certain slaves - or ensuring that they aren't overburdened by anything. If they happen to sleep in when they're supposed to be up early, he doesn't care so long as they eventually do their work. He's also likely to not yell at them versus how he's careless with other slaves. He holds his tongue around other's slaves as he's uncertain of them or their personality but he's not afraid to stoop so low as to berate slaves for being incompetent in their jobs. If it is a family owned slave that doesn't do their job his opinion on them wavers and he is often noted to throw more responsibilities on them and will verbally berate them if they still lack.
He's aware of physical capabilities and will be slightly more slack about it but he expects things to get done. He won't so much as blink if he is witness to slaves getting whipped or kicked until they're down for not doing their job - the furthest he'd likely do physically is forcefully shove them but he does believe that they need discipline if they don't do their job.
That being said, he holds no candle to the Roaring Seas group and nearly always has a visible disgusted expression on his face every time he hears the name in conversation.

* Hates adulterers. Has no sympathy for them at all.

* Could care less for the Roaring Seas cats but would not care much for holding back his disgust of them if he were to encounter one. This stems from the fact that they represent freedom and that cats are capable of comprehensible thought and production and productivity without control. Which he believes is very much not true. Control brings results.
* Although, after Zak, he is his father's favoured son, he doesn't care much for if he inherits or not. He does, however, enjoy the life he lives and would fight his sibling who would dare inherit and take it from him.
* He does not take kindly to those who mistreat slaves when it was another slave's fault. His opinion on the cat will be neigh-repairable if he catches wind and proof of the transgressions.
* He has high respect [ and low tolerance ] for slaves who are physically fit, such as labour slaves. This is due to having been beaten by one, on orders, to "show him some manners". This is where he got the scar below his eye. The other was when he displeased his father and his father chose to discipline him. He never repeated the mistake again.
