The funny thing is that it wasn't the original fans, that is the Japanese, at all who wanted Goku back as the main focus for the Buu saga, it was the company! Toei to be exact, who were worried about the anime. (This was a prime time show slotted in at about 7:30 PM.)
Gohan is the favourite DBZ character in Japan!
There was a recent poll that placed manga heroes and Gohan was number one, Goku came in at number 3 and Vegeta was somewhere near 12 if I remember.
