...Commentary by my dear friend Alec
Do daylight ghosts walk?
She, robed in severity,
cannot see the child
who chews her thumb. Must she too
disappear when beauty blooms?

This summer, we have thousands of Arab tourists. I really dislike seeing women with this black bogey dress while men wear, trendy T-shirts, shorts, sunglasses. It is not fair.
Thank you very much dear Riki

Why do you say this sad
She wants to hide her beauty for foreign men

I am not against her own will. I am agianst because she "must" do it if it is her own decision or not. Does she have permission to do everything like a man? Can she drive a car? Can she travel alone? Humanity does not mean "Male". Women are also human beings.

We have rules in our religion
The woman is not in suppression
she is protected and saved
Islam did justice everything , Islam appreciated the women
.. Your words not true ever
don't judge before see and know the truth

Believe me, I feel good when a woman defend to wear veils because I understand that it is your own choice. I am a muslim, too. I don't want wear it. If I come to your country, will I have a chance not to wear it?
Or can you drive a car? As far as I can see, you are a smart, talented woman. You know English, you are here at dA. I am sure you can drive a car. Why is it forbitten to you?
It is not Islam. It is a pressure over women.

Well , first thank you for the way you talk
Women can driving .. Except in Saudi Arabia
Islam wants the woman to protect and save herself
Do not be surprised by my knowledge of English
Because Islam urged us on science
Islam arrived to you in the wrong picture
and i'm so glad that i knew you are a muslim
it's very nice to meet you .

I think that the present resurgence of veiling in public in European countries, where the surrounding culture doesn't oblige women to do it, is a very bad sign of regression.
Most Muslim women in France do not wear a veil of any sort.
I'm 71 and when I was young I never saw any. I was born in England and at that time Indian women wore saris, which were beautiful, but other nationalities didn't wear veils. Now they are very widespread there because of many Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrants.
I married a Frenchman and have lived in France for a long time. I never saw a veil here until around the 1990's. Actually the first women I saw were Turkish immigrants who came from villages in your country. They just wear a coloured headscarf. Then some Arab women followed. There are a few hundred fully veiled women in France, some show their face but some have just a slit for the eyes.
My two sons are married to women from Muslim cultures and neither of them wear a veil. They think like you do.
My opinion is that hiding from men's eyes to protect yourself and not to tempt them is a bad thing. It's up to men to respect women in the street. It's their responsibility and that includes European men too.

I believe that most of the women who have veils are not happy. They take more attention than the normal dressed women. It makes them angry and they feel they are out of society in European countries and even in Turkey. Sure, it is sad.
After the collapse of Easten Block, Islamic countries became more concervative and agressive about their culture. It reminds me that amazing book of H.G. Wells' 1984. Turkey is also getting more and more concervative. It makes me think the Middle Age of Christianity.
Women are still trying hard to be considered as an equal human being in many parts of the world, not only in Islamic countries. We must realize and talk about it. There are many other problems begin to occur here, [link]
A son who has a veilled and passive mother, will not respect the freedom of women in the future. We must teach our children to be respectful.

I can't tell for women in Muslim countries. I know that a few Saudi women are protesting about their right to drive a car.
Here in France some women have begun to wear a veil as a reaction to their position in our society. In France there is a lot of unemployment among immigrant people from North Africa, and some young men have turned back to their traditions and religion. Most young Arab men here are unhappy and exercise more tyranny on their sisters and wives. Some young women feel they must cover their head. They are afraid.
Still, some of them say they choose to wear this traditional clothing. Sometimes it's a protest because they can not be citizens like everyone else. Both men and women have no work, no money and no respect from others.
In my family we worry about a return to past nationalisms in Europe too. The extreme right is rising again.
In England there is an important religous revival that is regressive. People have started believing the biblical ideas of creation instead of the scientific explanation of evolution. In the USA it's worse.
So far in France it's a political movement rather than a religious one.
Womens rights are still not complete in Europe. You are right. Education and good examples are necessary. You are right again. Respect should be the rule in both sexes.
Good luck to you. It's good to discuss and exchange ideas.

subjugation, no matter its basis or form,
is slavery called by a different name;
it says, "i own you".
is religion the cause... or simply the
method used to subjugate?
[the better religions are merely 'big
business', each soul a fount of tithing]
thank you, Alec for the expose'.
