Description
[1962]It had been a while since Rheneas returned home. She was feeling better than ever and ran the line along with the others rather well. She already knew Peter Sam and Sir Handel from their first day and had grown a keen friendship with Rusty. However, her attention as of now aimed at Duncan. She never got the chance to speak to the Scottish engine as he was always busy with his own work.
As luck would have it, their first train they handled was an early morning train up the line and back. As they left the big station, Rheneas tried to start a conversation.
"So, you must be Duncan?" she asked.
There wasn't a reply.
"You are quite... tall. I mean no offense!" the old lady caught herself, "I have a tall funnel as well. But... anyways, how have you been enjoying the line so far?"
". . ."
Rheneas sighed, looking down at her buffers. She then thought back to what Skarloey told her about him.
"I heard you came from a factory in Scotland. You also had a rough time fitting through my own tunnel as well as stopping on my own viaduct-"
"It was ah' accident..." Duncan finally spoke, "Ah... I was... uh..."
Rheneas could see right through any engine, much like Skarloey. She understood what Duncan felt.
"I'm not entirely mad at you, but I am disappointed. Passengers are our top priority. Stopping on viaducts or rocking and rolling in tunnels isn't exactly their ideal, nor ours. I presume Skarloey told you the story of my gallant effort?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Duncan was silent until, "Aye, he did. Yer' heroic effurts are why tis' line is still runnin'. Ah jus' don't understan' 'ow ye culd get into a situation like tha' an' still struggle on. I culd never..."
"It's called determination, my dear engine." Rheneas smiled, "If I gave up, our railway would've closed, I couldn't do that to our passengers or us. Besides, it all paid off in the end - now we have more engines running this line. I also heard you're a really hard worker despite your rough nature. I respect that."
Duncan was quite shocked. He hadn't expected that from Rheneas. He blushed a bit and laughed awkwardly.
"T-thank ye..." he looked away quickly.
Rheneas just smiled warmly as they puffed up the line.
