Description
So I saw this influence meme floating around and I just HAD to try it out! I took a good hard think about what inspires me most. I KINDA stuck to the size thing (bigger = more influence) but some things had to be shrunk down to make room for other things. But the biggest ones are the biggest influences on me and my art.Let’s start at the top and work our way down shall we?
Sam Kieth - The Maxx was one of those things I watched as a child and loved its art and how it looked but it never sunk it how deep it really was until I watched it as an adult and was actually able to grasp its concepts. I am in love with Julie winters she’s been a huge inspiration in not only my art but in me as well, I took a lot of classes in college geared towards helping people who could not help themselves ( much like a social worker) and she was the first time I ever saw a "flawed" character portrayed as beautiful despite the fact that she "has a fat gut, bad breath, chafe marks where her jeans cut in and stubbly under arms" she was my first exposure to pretty flaws and I credit her to why I think their so beautiful to this day.
Eldon Dedini & Erich Sokol - I was exposed to lots of shit as a child that I probably shouldn’t have been... but I'm grateful that I was because it's shaped who I am and how I draw. THAT being said I was exposed to Eldon Dedini & Erich Sokol's art at the tender age of 8 because my babysitters were incompetent and kept their vintage playboy collection where anyone could find them and me being the curious little pisspot that I was found them and flipped through them and since as a female seeing naked woman was nothing new to me what I DID find was the art, I fell in love with it! Their figures were so lifelike! They were beautiful and shapely and they were HAPPY THAT WAY! Seeing these girls ooze confidence was what made them so appealing I picked up on this even as a child and still use it.
Sailor Moon - Sailor moon has both helped and hindered my artist growth I was up at the ass crack of dawn every day to watch it, it hindered me because for years I drew what I call "cheat profiles" where you just draw a swoop for where the nose should be then straight down the rest of the face no matter what type of nose or character your drawing. it sort of makes your characters look like Berenstain bears however, I saw that sailor moon could get away with it I thought that I could too ( I've been cheat profile free for going on 3 years now!) and when I started drawing very early on everything I drew was ALL LIMBS! Thank you sailor moon for sparking my life long obsession with long leggy characters.
80's - 90's MTV - SPECIFICALLY late 80's early 90's MTV oh man that was when animation as at it's prime! It was a Renaissance in the second dimension! MTV actually played MUSIC instead of reality shows and there were always awesome shows on! Liquid television, Bevis & Butthead, Cartoon Sushi just to name a few! but one that really sticks in my mind is this kick ass block of animation called "Weird Ass Cartoon Weekend" and it got me though a very difficult time in my life: my parents divorce. While they were busy fighting I was left to fend for myself and I spent my time alone watching cartoons. I didn't know it at the time but that was what set me on the path of wanting to make cartoons that were more adult instead of the average Saturday morning mush that was geared towards Kids.
Bob Clampett & Betty Boop - when I WAS being watched properly as a child one of the many things on TV that I enjoyed was silver age animation, like Betty Boop and Bob Clampett, their characters were SO expressive! It makes me sad to see what Betty Boop has been turned into thanks to her popularity on bumper stickers. But Bob Clampett still remains untainted it was his catlike eyes that drew me to his character so mysterious! So feral! This was also the age where women were almost always shaped like women can i get a hell yea!?
Pokemon - yea that’s right! I was one of those the poketards who gathered at shops to play cards and Pokémon stadium. Oh man did I have the biggest crush ever on James from Team Rocket. My obsession with him is what started me on drawing -ever single day- I have marble note books filled page to page of comics if they weren't so god-awful I'd share them with you all. but they were -bad- I mean REALLY bad, all drawn in bic ballpoint pen during classes I SHOULD HAVE been paying attention too all though grammar school. But I didn't care if they were bad- I drew everything no matter how "hard it was" perspective, foreshortening, above shots, action shots you name it! I was FEARLESS! And this is something that I feel like I have lost as an adult... I spend so much time worrying about if something will " look bad' instead of just drawing it because it needs to be drawn that I just don't draw it at all...so I don't take the risks like I used too. Hmm... I need to put a stop to that.
Also: yes, it did go right over my head that James was a flaming homosexual. I didn't care! I wanted to marry him so bad
Earthworm Jim- I blame everything that’s wrong with my art content on this show... because this series had shit like flying cows, beating up old ladies, Mitochondria villains. I thought it was okay for me to have Mutant Gila monsters, floating fetuses and radioactive green skulls.
Butch Hartman - Fairly Odd Parents was one of those shows that stressed exaggeration as a good thing, I mean seriously- whose chin looks like that!?
Warner Brothers- I love everything this company makes! even the stinkers like Histeria ( that show was awesome! I don't care what thr critics say!) Freakazoid was another character I was in love with at a very early age (god knows why, there’s so much wrong with him mentally) but he single-handedly coined the practice of "annoying your arch nemesis" instead of just "defeating" them. This show also helped me in drawing men that looked like MEN, I went though this phase of drawing super girly guys and people always asking " is that a girl!?" EVEN WHEN THEY WERE SHIRTLESS! but Freakazoid is full of so many wonderfully diverse guys that I got a good grasp on what men should look like: lots and lots of shoulders! Mmm.
Spumco_ I think at least half of DA was inspired by Spumco to some degree (the other half was inspired by transformers) Ren and Stimpy, the Ripping friends all that good stuff! It has certain fluidity to the style that I strive for!
Peter Chung- I COULD HAVE made this square bigger but again: space constraints. Aeon Flux was everything I loved all rolled into one, the long leggy look of Sailor Moon combined with the dark twisted future that I grew to love. Everything was black and shiny, Aeon died like every other episode. Good stuff!
Bruce Timm - This man is a stellar artist, a wonderful story teller and an amazing animator. He’s everything I could ever hope to be and then some. when I saw his art I noticed that no one ever had any problem distinguishing the girls from the guys something I badly needed to learn and when that time came I went back to the shows I watched growing up, Batman, Superman, Justice League.
Jamie Hewlett - this entire map could be filled with Jamie Hewlett and it would be an accurate description. His work is what inspired me to pursue drawing serious as a career. if not for him I would not be here on deviant sharing my art with you all, I wouldn't have my amazing friends I met though the Gorillaz fandom like ~zombielily and *cinda7 I wouldn't have my brother from another mother who I met as a result of going to art school ~celluloid-dreamer I wouldn't have the faintest clue what Love was because I would have never met ~Starbucks . Jamie Hewlett's work didn't just shape my art...it shaped me... it was what I first started looking at to construct heads and the tiny things like how limbs connected to bodies, crooked smiles, and tiny little details that make the picture complete! It started with Tank Girl I saw the movie in 1995 and unlike most of the fandom I actually like the movie. And it continued on with Gorillaz. I don't know where I would be right now if not for Gorillaz- and frankly I don't care to know.
Ralph Bakshi- did I mention that I was poorly supervised as a child? Because I should not have been exposed to the overly sexual raunchy world of Ralph Bakshi. But I was! Someone in my family thought it would be appropriate to bring over Cool World for me to watch because it was a cartoon and oh hey " it's just like Roger rabbit!" but I -loved- it! I was instantly attracted to the naughtiness of cartoons that I wasn't supposed to be watching! That was MY big rebellious stage, watching cartoons for adults before I hit puberty... I guess I should have just gone out and got high or laid like everyone else... I could have turned out normal!...fuck being normal. Ralph's characters are SO diverse and creative! Who knew a fat Old Italian man could have such a cast of snow flakes.
Peter Paul Rubens- bet y'all didn't know I was into classical painting now did ya!? well when I was looking for more realistic influences to start life drawing seriously I looked to " the masters" of art and I instantly found a connection with Rubens work... his figures are beautiful! The way their skin folds and their bums sag, soft fleshy humans! It doesn't get more raw than that.
Dragon Ball Z - you all knew that if sailor moon was on here that DBZ wouldn't be far behind. Dragon ball Z more so inspired my way of thinking rather than my actual art- I'm sure the influence is IN my art but it was the mentality of a show having such a HUGE CAST! Giving them all screen time, their own personalities and having it all balance out. That helped me strive to keep all my characters straight ( not literally) and give them their own lives and shit that they do even if their not the main focus of something.
WOO! that was a lot to explain! Then again brevity has never been my strong point huh guys? any-who heres the blank meme
I highly suggest it for those who are in a big of an art funk or block! after visiting my roots I feel completely recharged!
I think you all will too.

Rubens' version of Saturn, in my opinion, is just as scary as Goya's much more famous version.

Awesome selection! I feel the same with Butch Hartman, Warners Bros and Stumco cause I grew up on them.
But Sailor Moon is my main one on here. I watch it when it premiered when I was 5 and I still love it to this day!
Great selections, Candy! I see a lot of them in your work today! <3

This was awesome. I enjoyed learning about your art history.
"I mean seriously- whose chin looks like that!?" The Crimson Chin, that's who! (btw, he reminds me of a less-creepy Really Really Big Man with less-prominent nipples.) I fucking LOVE The Fairly OddParents -- so much that I once sang the theme song for an audition.

I had fun telling it, it's always fun when you can look at things like this and understand where the artist comes from!

Ahem. I can really see them in your style, too. It's kind of neat when you lay them all out and it sort just clicks like "Oh hey, I see it now."

It's kind of uncanny how much your influence show when you actually point it out! (0's MTV!! Man I had forgotten how much I was inspired by that. The Maxx was just the best!! It's cool to see DBZ in there, I am a big fan, and I have been snatching up some of there shading techniques as of lately. Nice image choices too!!

Most of the time when I'm asked to list my influences I wheel off Jamie hewlett, peter chung, butch hartman and sailormoon and people are usually like "I don't see it" or " I KINDA see it"
but when you add in all the other minute things that have influenced me over the years it paints a bigger picture!
thank you!!! some things were so hard to find images of so I just screen capped youtube videos!

You definitely have some interesting influences! I heard of a good portion of them, especially Ralph Bakshi. I love how you used an image from Spice City, too. I love that show a lot! I can definitely see some of the aspects from your influences in your artwork; you have excellent taste.

It was so hard to narrow it down but I think I got a good balance here of whats important to have in it and whats not.
Ralph bakshi is the MAN! he mastered the female form and even got criticized for exploiting it! but I think he did it justice.

you say "watched" when you refer to the Maxx so i'm guessing you meant the show, but did you ever get to read the comics it's based on?

yes! I actually own some of the comics, the animated series didn't do it justice I feel but it was my earliest exposure to Sam Kieth's work. I've only managed to get a hold of the first and 5th issues of the comic and Volume 2 of the Collection.

i think the cartoon is probably more "solid" than the comic, as in a solid experience, because the comic has a few detours like other Image characters showing up, that sort of thing, but the comic is way crazier and weirder than the show. recently i've been stacking up comics to sell/get rid of, and i have every Maxx issue except Friends Of Maxx #3 and if you're interested you can make an offer before i put them up on ebay...
i also recommend Kieth's other comics, like Zero Girl, Four Women, and Legs. he has some more recent stuff like Ojo and My Inner Bimbo that i haven't completely read yet.

Candy2021 In reply to mooncalfe [2010-08-22 18:51:05 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes I've watched the cartoon backwards and forwards and I can get the whole feel of it from just that but I'd love to catch up on the comics to see what a missed.
Tempting offer! how much are you asking for? if the price is right I may jump at it if it means no competition
I'm trying to get a hold of Zero Girl and My inner bimbo but proving to be a more daunting task than I anticipated. I DO however have his version of Arkham asylum and Ojo. great stuff.

hmmmm, i don't know, um... it's 38 issues (which includes the #1/2 issue and Darker Image) plus two Friends Of Maxx issues, which if i sold for how much i paid for them would be about $80 because i think the issues were 2 bucks each (gotta check on that, don't have them with me). then plus whatever shipping costs is.
i also have both Zero Girl series, Legs, Four Women, and the My Inner Bimbo trade collection if you're interested.

I'm very interested! trying to get a hold of any of his work in my neck of the woods is like pulling teeth. the comic shop actually ordered me a punisher comic by mistake when I went looking for the Maxx.
for the entire series $80 sounds very reasonable. I may be able to swing zero girl and my inner bimbo too ( $100 is my spending limit at the time being I would LOVE Four women too but I don't wanna push it) I've been looking for these series for quite a long time and if I'm going to get them at all, I would much rather give my money to you to support you in doing your art instead of some super store.
I have a proposition for you and it will save us both time and Money. Your going up to NY Comic Con in October correct? if you can bring them with you I'll be more than happy to take them off your hands at the convention. if this sounds good to you what would the total be? 8)

your NYCC idea sounds good, but i have to figure out if i can fit the comics in my suitcase! i'm sure it'll be fine, though, i travel pretty light. i can give you My Inner Bimbo for free, actually, since it was a comp copy from the publisher and i didn't pay for it, so i can throw in Four Women also if you want. so for everything (Maxx, Four Women, both Zero Girl series, plus free My Inner Bimbo) maybe $110? 10 bucks over your limit?

Candy2021 In reply to mooncalfe [2010-09-08 21:39:45 +0000 UTC]
if you can swing it that would be wonderful!
you drive a hard bargain Ross! 110$ is stretching it a bit, especially since I did wanna buy things from your booth while at the con ( shadow eyes, a wet moon t-shirt if you get them in my size etc) however since I know the money is going to good use, supporting you in your art endeavors and getting a hold of Sam Kieth's work is something I've been trying to do most of my young adult life. I say we got a deal!
I'll meet up with you at the Oni press booth or if thats not cool we can meet up elsewhere and grab lunch while we do business ( I don't know how your publisher would feel about you seeing stuff that's not by oni press and I don't want to get you in any hot water) we can hammer out a day and time as the date gets closer. sound good?

haha, okay, i relent, let's keep it at $100 and i'll throw in the other stuff for free PLUS a Maxx-related goodie i found last night, how's that? i mostly just want to get rid of some comics cluttering up the place, and they're much better off in the hands of somebody like you who hasn't read most of this stuff.
we can meet up after one of my signings, like if you come/hang around the booth when my signing ends we can do business then, so we're not taking up space at the table.

You're a prince as always Ross! sounds like a plan to me!!!
I'm seriously starved for Sam Kieth goodies ESPECIALLY Maxx related work.
the closest I've come is a battered volume 2 of a collection at the public library...sad.
that sounds like an excellent idea! it's not like I have a ton to do at the con so hanging around after a signing sounds like ideal!
