"'I know you are not even thinking about going outside in your perfectly white graduation gown that is going to stay perfectly white,' my sister says, her hands on her hips.

I roll my eyes but smile before slipping it off, hanging it over a chair in the dining room. I slide the backdoor open, close it behind me, and slip off my heels.

I walk slowly to the little patch of dirt surrounded by grass where a weight used to be and dig a small hole using one of my grandmother's gardening shovels. The letter I wrote and the rock I've clung too tightly to fall easily into its little depth. Then I pause and I look up at the beautiful sky and take a big, long breath.

There are many beginnings in life. There is the day your parents met and the day you were born. The hour you took your first step, the moment of your first kiss, the day you marry the one you love. Even the day your heart was first completely broken was a beginning in your life. This day is a beginning for me.

I exhale, long and steady, releasing all of the pain of this past year. Releasing all of my sadness and frustration, all of the bad thoughts and the hopelessness. I release it all in this moment because it's time to move on. It's time to keep walking, to stop crying.

Today is the day that my life begins."
