Here's a different thing, style experiments! These were a lot of fun. The one with the almost dvd/vhs box art style shading was pose referenced off of a Balto 2 screenshot to get a feel for the style: www.animationsource.org/sites_… At first I was just trying to draw in the Balto style, but a few of Rook's features don't translate that well to it (mainly body shape and markings). I can only compromise so far on markings with him, and he doesn't quite fit the deep chest/narrow waist thing Balto style has going on. imo the chests do get too deep and broad at times anyway, when real wolves are actually pretty narrow animals (though I think this is a more in the sequels than the first). So I just sort of let it do its own thing as I went. I like the sitting and laying ones, and I have mixed feelings about the other two. But they were all super fun experimentation! I enjoyed pushing flow and angular lines more. At least that's what I think I was doing. I have another iteration with a slightly different style again, but it got more elaborate than planned and I have to finish it.Edit: now bigger for easier detail viewing!

He's so splendidly disenchanted looking haha. These are cool stylization experiments, I like them all, but the two with the harder shading are my favourites. Love the bit of soft shading that's present in the 3/4 standing pose at the top.

I think what may have helped is that Balto outlines all of the colors, so each marking has a black line separating it from the other colors.

Oh yeah probably, most of these actually have lightly penciled-in marking outlines but by the time I resized it they don't show too well. I think I'll resize it again a bit bigger and reupload because I missed that. I did sort of depart from the original inspiration though haha.
