Description DAMN THE THUMBNAIL, IT'S TOO LARGE.
ZOOM IN FOR A PROPER VIEW.

Assignment: Create a themed piece of artwork based on your literary passage of choice.

I based mine off of a quote from The Radetzky March, by Joseph Roth:

"In those other lands the name of the Hero of Solferino meant nothing. They too had monarchs. And these monarchs had their own rescuers. Following such trains of thought was highly confusing; for a lieutenant in the monarchy it was confusing as when people like us imagine that the world is only one heavenly body among millions upon millions, that there are countless suns in the Milky Way, each one with its own planets, and that you yourself are a very worthless individual -- if not, to put it quite grossly, a pile of crap. "

Note that I based it on the idea, not the book.

This painting was done on a 6ft x 2ft wooden board. The columns on the bottom are strips of cheesecloth stuck onto the board with acrylic paint. For the bluish-black background, I used those flakey water-based housepaints that you see in buckets. Most of the details, however, are painted in oils and oil pastels. With the board standing as tall as myself, this is by far my biggest actual painting (yeah, still need to pack some experience under my belt).

Pardon the quality of the digital photography - it's hard to even get a none-foreshortened shot of it!

I was drawn to your gallery for your werewolf art - but I've got to comment on this. This is beautifully done, and despite the sense of action in the swirling vortex and the subtle disintegration occuring in the background buildings, the painting is almost still and dreamlike - more akin to surrealism. An all around very eerie and beautiful painting. I'm even more impressed by the innovative use of different media. Excellent work!

i've always found vertical frames extremely elegant in their linearity. But pulling off a frame and composition like this speaks volumes about your skills.
brilliant!

This is WONDERFUL. Wow you get to create artwork as a student? And have teaching, and assignments? When I was in high school our "art" classes consisted of a room with pencils and paper, and no instruction. I envy you.

Typhoons, wormholes, vortexs, cities, mountains... you can find a lot of comparisons. As Dan pointed out earlier, it's really open to interpretation .

I wish that I had a profound comment to contribute, or maybe even a small quip about your use of technique... there's nothing though. No real words anyway. I just wanted to let you know that this creeped into me on a more psychological/symbolic level than anything. Anyway, beautiful piece. Keep it up. :]

How'd I not comment on this? Did it go up while I was away? O.o No... damn. Neglecting my peoples. This is incredible. The texture and inclusion of mixed media elements really makes it look neat and stand out like. I originally took it for being underwater and that thing a whirlpool before reading the text, and it's great how I can switch back and forth between the galaxy and the whirlpool in my mind now. The colors are fantastic and the compostion is relatively simple, but really nicely done.

splendid work, man --

that vortex in the sky is very reminiscent of bosch's incredible ascent to heaven..

thnx for your reamrks by the way --

oh - also -- of course, when i referred to the interminible dullness, I was implying abocve all the criticism rather than the critic... although don't delude yourself, you'll see as I did at my (ivy league) university - that the critics and academics themselves have a real marked tendency towards tedium... as george bernard shaw said of academics, "the fights are so vicious because the stakes are so low..."

talk soon man,

I can relate.
There you are, standing in the middle of a city, full of people who live lives just like you standing mere meters from each other. But the city is just one of thousands across the planet, one of a handful orbiting our sun, which consitutes but a billionth of the stars in the galaxy, of which there are billions upon billions of in the universe. And we stand in our collective googleplex of individuality, and we look up at the galaxies in the sky, and we see how in the long run, we're just like grains of sand on the beach... the universe isn't moved by one grain of sand.
This looks absolutely wonderful. I've never been able to create textures like that. I'm definately adding this to my favorites.

Interesting... when I first saw this one, I thought of an underground city, with an unreachable spot of light shining from a hole in the surface... which has its own set of symbolic values.

That's really brilliant, even if it wasn't intentional. I like how this one's so open to interpretation.

Amo's point is nicely thought out.
To me, it does look like a ruined city, yet not underwater. The swirl in the sky is sort of a vortex. Bah, what do i know, listen to Amo!

Seriously though, the swirl in the sky is very nicely shown. The way it is actually painted is very nice. Also, the colours used on the buildings, or whatever they are, really give an impression of ruin.

Excellent job Canis, and +fav.

I'm surprised no one stated an observation relating it to an underwater scene, which is how I see it.

Something like an ancient city lost to the sea, having one last glimpse at daylight at the provision of a gigantic whirpool.
