He's Titus, a childhood friend of Machete's.

He was before the ascension to the clergy, when they were both living in a Sicilian monastery as novices. Titus had been taken in because his legs were crippled, Machete because of his sickliness. The monastery was sacked and most of the monks were killed, and Titus lost his life, they were around 16 at that time. Machete never really got over it, I guess.
