Many people from school have difficulties learning Maya. I had few lessons last year, so I knew what was waiting ahead of me. People woh love modeling, rendering and stuff should have no difficulties learning Maya.
If you've never worked with Maya or a different 3d program, I recommend you should search for some tutorials and readers on the net. Because some menus and options are well hidden 
You should try it someday!

I believe maya has a nice system to add hair quickly.

Theres a lot of tutorials on the net, but theres also a tab in the rendering tab called Hair. I could be wrong though, because I have Maya 8.5, which is ofcourse much newer.
