"Millie! Wow, I didn't recognize your voice for a minute there.""Yes, it's me. I use my official voice during work hours but after they leave..." She
mused, while glancing downward at me.
"Let's get going! The traffic will be horrendous getting over to Kelly's and I'll drive. I
know you don't have a car. Afterwards, I'll take you home as well."
I couldn't argue with her logic, so we rushed down to the parking level and got into her
Olds Cutlass. Millie wielded a steady hand as she drove through some heavy traffic,
which eased my mind. She had also let her hair down, as well as taking off her glasses.
"I can see fine, I just wear those so I look more like a manager. Otherwise, there are
some younger ones, who would challenge me. I guess they're looking to take my job
but, I can take care of myself."
At dinner, I think we both enjoyed Kelly's signature pasta dish and the wine I selected,
seemed to make her smile with each sip.
"Millie, why did you pick me to have dinner with you? I've just started this job and don't
have near the knowledge and experience you have?" I asked, hoping she wouldn't think
I was being ungrateful.
"Davy, I've noticed your work and I think you have excellent qualities. You'll make a good
title examiner with a little help, here and there. Plus, I'm tired of these women giving
me grief because they feel they should be in my shoes. You have what it takes."
I didn't know what to say. Then, she gently placed her hand on mine;
"There's a few more things you need to know, about me, before you answer. I don't
want you to get caught off guard, should you hear some nasty rumors about me or
about us." she noted.
Millie's honesty made me nervous but, even in the dim candlelight from a candle
which had been inserted into an empty bottle of Chianti wine on our table, I felt
I could trust her.
"We all have secrets and I'm no different. Which sports do you enjoy?"
"Well, there baseball, football, boxing, tennis..." I suggested.
Suddenly her face lit up as the candle light flickered and danced about.
"Boxing eh? Well this may surprise you but I like it too! In fact, I enjoy putting on
a pair of gloves and getting in a good "hard" workout every now and then."
I tried my hardest not to show surprise but, I think she saw through my veil
attempt. Here's a beautiful mature woman with red lips, who says she likes
to box yet, there's not a mark on her face, anywhere? Impossible, I thought
to myself.
"Let's go, my young assistant. They say a picture is worth a thousand words
and from your bewildered expression, I think you're going to need a little
proof." Millie grinned.
She took the dinner bill out of my hand and refused to give it back;
"I invited you so, I'll take care of it. Okay?"
The ride to her place, left me speechless, as I didn't know what to expect. My
heart was beating so fast, I wanted to pass out but she rolled down my
car window, so the cool night air would revive me.
Her two story home sat between two smaller ones and had a rather large yard all
the way around it. She had a two car garage, which she parked in front of. Then
she guided me to her home's back service porch entrance.
Once inside Millie turned on the lights to reveal quite a large living room.
"Sit over there, on the couch and relax. There's some Brandy in that bottle
on the coffee table, so please help yourself. I'm going to get out of this business
suit, if that's okay with you?"
"Go right ahead, I'll be right here." I spoke.
I looked around after she had left and marveled at the way her home was furnished.
Everything was neatly arranged and I didn't notice a speck of dust anywhere. But, on
on a nearby stand, I found a large picture book, which grabbed my curiosity.
I didn't want to be nosy but I couldn't help but look through a few of it's pages. The
photos it contained really took my breath away. It was Millie, maybe in her younger
days in a boxing ring, with her gloves held high, as though she had just won a
championship!
A closer look revealed a wide black leather belt around her waist, with a gold
medallion on it, which read "Women's Middleweight Boxing Champion."
I was so captivated by the photos, that I failed to hear a door close behind me;
"Well Davy. What do you think of me now? I see you've been peeking through my
past," her voice floated around my ears.
Fearing I was in deep trouble, I turned to beg her forgiveness. But, there she
stood in her white bikini top and bottoms, black silk stockings in a pair of black pumps.
Her dark hair was pinned up on in the back of her head and she was sporting a pair of wine
colored boxing gloves.
I was so transfixed, I couldn't stop staring. She looked just as she was, in some of
the photos which had been taken. And, she was right! It would have taken me a thousand
words to describe, how I was starting to feel about her...
