Part 2
Mishka learned, not long after her growth, that being independent wasn't easy. There were plenty of bills to pay and not a large variety of jobs available in the town. For the past couple of weeks, she had been temping a number of jobs. Those jobs ranged from puckoo farming to organizing books in the library. Her latest endeavor was working out the checks and balances of the businesses in town square.
The businesses in Wynsiph were awful with numbers. A lot of adult Wyngro didn't know or have the time for the math skills needed to run a business. You needed to calculate stock, profit and expenses, what customers were buying, how much wyngrew were willing to pay for, and so on. It was rather dull work that most shop owners couldn't afford the time to do. That's were Mishka came in. Mishka was nothing short of a wizard with numbers. She could calculate large sums in a matter of seconds. Not only that, but after calculating the numbers, she could apply them to graphs and charts to distinguish trends. Mishka could tell shop owners how often to keep something in stock, how much should be ordered on a monthly basis, where to place big ticket items in the store, and how to increase their profit margin. If a shop owner was selling perishable goods, she should even tell them what day of the week to purchase their items.
Needless to say, Mishka had customers. Her knowledge in stats led to a great increase in her reputation. Every night Mishka would stay up late inking in numbers into scraps of parchments. At the end of each session, she would roll out a separate blank scroll and write a summary report of the business. It was tedious work, but it paid better than the other temp jobs she started.
One morning, as Mishka was making her rounds delivering papers, a shopkeeper mentioned how good Mishka would be at starting up her own store. The idea clicked. She starting her own business? The idea sounded absurd, but intriguing. She politely declined the shopkeeper stating, "I'm much too busy with the work I have now to start something that extravagant."
"But does it make you happy?" The shopkeeper questioned, "Punching in all those numbers day after day isn't the most exciting work. You're young, you should be thinking of grandiose plans. I'm sure this isn't the life you imagined for yourself as a Wyngling."
"You're right," Mishka muttered, a little shell-shocked, "I never would have wanted this for myself."
Mishka hurried back home, still living at the nook until she could find a place of her own. She quickly pulled out a quill and ink and began to jot ideas down on paper. Only this time, it wasn't numbers, but sketches. Mishka drew building designs and layouts. She wanted to own her own shop. Not just any shop mind you, but the only alchemy shop in Wynsiph. It would be grand. She used to love chemistry, and would read all about experiments and potion making in the library. It also appealed to her pyromaniac nature and a chance to really study magic.
New ideas swirled in her head. She could create magic potions. What if magic could be transferred into bottles for Wyngrew who didn't know how to use magic? How much simpler would their lives be if they could just instantly heat food or grow plants? Everyone would get to reap the benefits that magic brought.
Now, the new problem was money. In order to purchase a shop of her own it would take a lot of money just to buy something run down. She had a good amount saved up from her statistic work, but nothing fancy. She decided to work harder at her job now and save up for a building.
Eventually, she was going to reach her dream, no matter how hard she was going to have to work.
