There are a couple reasons
1) The whole hand amputation thing had already been done by another (much more popular) artist and I didn't wanna seem like a copycat
2) I somehow made it canon in my head that he's left-handed and I figured that amputation would be a last-ditch effort
3) I like drawing hands xD
