Description
Here I associate Hololive EN Gen 1 with the Four Gods (or "Symbols") plus the Yellow Dragon (eastern mythology). Gura is the Azure Dragon, Kiara is the Vermilion Bird, Calli is the White Tiger, Ina is the Black Tortoise, and Ame is the Yellow Dragon. These Symbols also tie in with the Chinese Wu Xing elements, respectively: Wood, Fire, Metal, Water, and Earth. That said, I could've also made Gura the Tortoise given her usual water element, but this time I just saw more reasons to give that to Ina--namely in color and personality. As part of the Wu Xing, the Black Tortoise would also be found where "yin" is most prominent on the yin yang, something that would fit Ina's quiet and tranquil personality better than the others'. (Not to mention octopi are aquatics too.) To suit the water element, the "dark warrior" motif of this Symbol, her own art talents, and the octopus, this version of Ina controls black ink.
Back to Gura, her youthfulness and colors work well with the Azure Dragon, which in extension to Wu Xing's Wood element, is associated with Spring. (By the way, both blue and green have been translated from "Azure" in Chinese and presumably Japanese.) All the same, I couldn't just discard Gura's own affinity for water either, so my overlap with wood is to make her a healer overall (hence the Curaga/herbal leaves). I was going to draw her drinking pure green tea, but my mind immediately jumped to Kung Fu Tea's variant (only more green and with Nata jelly). Nevertheless, it's not uncommon for eastern dragons to command water.
The White Tiger is associated with Autumn and Metal. Seasonally, that's perfect for the Reaper hence Calli's placement, but instead of a scythe, I gave her a pair of tiger hookswords. (I was going to color them silver, but I didn't want them to blend in with the surrounding colors, so I just used colors from her neighbors.) But rather than actually controlling metal, this version of Calli controls wind with her swords, but those sharp enough to imitate steel blades. The tiger I drew is actually molded from such whirlwinds.
Ame stood as the one member who isn't actually based on mythology, so I singled her out as the exceptional Yellow Dragon of the center; fits her color too. And since it's Earth on Wu Xing, that would fit her notorious "Ground Pound" too and that's the element I'm giving her. However, with her lore and as the most "modern" of her gen, I felt it would be most appropriate for her to use technology rather than mystical powers. So to fit earth, I gave her a drill and the dragon I drew is also a robot (and burrower).
Kiara as the Vermilion Bird scarcely needs explaining. I made her more red than orange in this drawing and while not shown, Kiara's signature techniques here consist of beaming fire-type sonic waves from her sword. And of course, she can also manifest fire as wings and talons.
