Description Anya stomped down the corridors of the upper decks of the Enterprise, resentment boiling inside of her. When she reached the entrance to her quarters, Anya angrily typed in the access code; the door slid open and Anya stepped in. Once the door slid behind her, Anya leaned against the door.

'How could jou be so STUPID??' Anya thought. 'Pavel doesn't understand ANYZHING about vhat jou go zhrough; eenstead, jou are only anozzer prize to be von!!'

Anya's eyes fell on the ring on her finger. Anya's initials loomed up at her, telling her that no matter how hard she tried, she could not escape people's judgements. Enraged, Anya took off the ring and threw it onto her bed. Just as the ring hit the pillow, Anya heard a knock on the door.

"Anastazia?" a voice timidly asked.

"GO AVAY!!" Anya yelled.

"Anastazia, vhat ees eet?"

Furious, Anya opened the door, startling Pavel.

"Jou know quvite vell vhat EET ees!" Anya retorted, her eyes flashing with rage.

Startled at her anger, Pavel stepped back.

'She'll take eet out on zhe vhole ship eef jou don't vatch eet, Pavel!' he thought to himself. 'She's ZHAT mad!'

"Anastazia, listen, I--"

But before Pavel could say any more, Anya swiftly cut him off.

"Nyet; JOU listen. I don't zhink jou know exactly vhat I am dealing vith, Pavel Andreievich Chekov. How many ozzer vomen een zhis crew have a family history een Starfleet?"

"Vell, I--"

"Only me. Do jou know how easy eet ees for me to liwe vith zhat?"

"Anastazia--"

"Eet's zhe toughest zhing een my life!" Anya shouted, the fury in her eyes becoming more apparent as she spoke. "My family and I have vorked so hard for so long to be recognized. And after hawing made eet zhis far, I'm NOT going to jeopardize eet all for some keptin vho zhinks he's going to get lucky! GOT EET??"

Taken aback by her outburst, Pavel quickly nodded as Anya breathed heavily, gradually calming down. As she relaxed, Pavel noticed that the rage in Anya's eyes was beginning to wane as tears began to well up.

"I'm sorry I reacted like zhat," Anya said, her voice quivering as she fought back her tears. "But jou just don't understand vhat I have to go zhrough, Pavel."

"I zhink I do, Anastazia," Pavel said quietly.

"Nyet," Anya said, her voice trembling as a lump formed in her throat. "I have to keep up appearances ewery day, not only for my own sake, but for zhe sake of my family's name and eweryzhing zhat eet stands for een Starfleet and een zhe Federation eetself."

Ashamed and confused, Anya turned away from Pavel and sat down on her bed and breathed deeply, trying hard not to cry.

Seeing this, Pavel began to realize that Anya was upset not just because she was afraid of meeting Kirk. She was also upset because she felt that she was not being seen by him as more than the latest generation of a legendary bloodline.

Knowing what he had to do, Pavel sat down next to Anya.

"Anastazia," Pavel said, taking Anya's hands in his. "I--"

But before he could say any more, Anya flung her arms around Pavel's neck, buried her face against his right shoulder, and let the tears fall. She knew that she was acting childish and weak, but she could not help herself.

Shocked by her expression of grief, Pavel nervously wrapped his arms around Anya's back and held her close to him, feeling her pain as she cried.

"Eet's okay, Anastazia," Pavel whispered, running a hand through her hair.

"Nyet," Anya sobbed, shaking her head, her tears falling faster as she spoke. "I zhought jou vere different. I zhought jou zhought I vas different. And zhis eesn't zhe vay for a Turetsky to act at all. I'm a failure for behawing zhis vay. I'm letting my vhole family down, Pavel, and...I...I...I don't know vhat--"

Before she finished speaking, Pavel gently put his hands on Anya's shoulders, causing her to look into his clear blue eyes.

"Anastazia," Pavel said softly. "I know zhat jou're scared; jou have ewery right to be. And I know zhat jou feel like jou're not achiewing vhat ees expected of jou. But eef jou need anyzhing--anyzhing at all--Turetsky or not, I'm here for jou."

At these last words, Anya's troubled china-blue eyes widened as a few stray tears fell.

"Pavel," Anya asked. "Do jou...do jou really mean zhat?"

Pavel lightly brushed her cheeks.

"Da," Pavel replied.

Hearing the sincerity in his voice, Anya instantly felt her worries dissolve. Slowly, Anya smiled at Pavel. Then, without thinking, she leaned forward and gave him a quick peck on his right cheek.

Pavel blushed and looked at Anya in surprise.

"Zhank jou," Anya said, happiness welling up inside of her.

Still surprised by Anya's earlier reaction, Pavel nervously said "...Jou're velcome...Ana."

"Anya," she gently corrected, her eyes shimmering with renewed confidence.

"Anya," Pavel repeated, smiling back at Anya, his eyes glowing with reassurance.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After cleaning up her face, Anya walked over to her bed and picked up her ring. As Anya's eyes fell on her initials, she felt her self-esteem rising.

'Jou vere vrong, Anya,' she thought, looking at the door, knowing that Pavel was standing outside waiting for her. 'He doesn't like jou because jou're a keptin's daughter; he likes jou... for JOU!!!!'

Slipping the ring on her right ring finger, Anya stood tall, took a deep breath, and walked out of her quarters.

At the sound of the door sliding back, Pavel looked up and smiled at Anya, who smiled back, confidence shining from her being.

"I'm ready," Anya said, her voice strong and clear.

Pavel nodded and motioned for Anya to follow him up to the bridge. As she did so, Anya felt her anxiety returning, but this time she was able to suppress it entirely.

'Just remember vhat Pavel said,' Anya thought, remembering all that Pavel had done for her in her time of need. 'He's zhere for jou and he cares a lot about jou. Zhe vay he held jou...zhe vay he spoke to jou...and his eyes,... oh, zhose eyes...Anya, he--'

The doors to the bridge swished open, interrupting Anya's thoughts. Anya stood tall, took a deep breath, and walked onto the bridge, Pavel following close behind. The moment the pair entered, Saavik and Spock looked up from the science officer's station.

"Welcome back," Saavik said, her eyes twinkling calmly.

"I am grateful for your return, Ensign," Spock said.

"Why Spock, you didn't tell me that you recommended someone else," a voice said.

Anya slowly turned around. The moment she saw who was speaking, Anya quickly stood at attention.

Seated in the centermost chair was a blond-haired man in a command division uniform, his blue eyes fixed at Anya.

"At ease, miss," the man said, causing Anya to relax a little.

"My apologies for not introducing her to you earlier, but you were not present on the bridge, Captain," said Spock. Then, gesturing to Anya, Spock went on. "This is our new recruit, Ensign Anastasia Turetsky."

"Captain James Tiberius Kirk," the man said, shaking Anya's hand. "Welcome aboard, Ensign."

Shocked at Kirk's introduction, Anya said, "An honor, Keptin," before walking over to the science officer's station.

'Maybe Lieutenant Sulu vas right,' Anya thought. 'Maybe Kirk eesn't zhat bad.'

"Turetsky," Kirk said, looking at his first officer. "Sounds familiar..."

"Perhaps hearing her full name will refresh your memory, Captain," said Spock, giving Kirk a classic Vulcan stare.

"And her full name is..."

"Anastasia NIKOLAYEVNA Turetsky," Spock replied, slightly enunciating Anya's patronymic.

"Nikolayev--" Suddenly, Kirk's eyes widened in shock. "Spock, you're JOKING!! The captain of the Kepler...is her FATHER!?!?!?"

"I am not joking in this matter, Captain. So when you are around Ensign Turetsky, it would be wise of you to follow this Earth axiom:" Spock then slowly enunciated the following words: "...TREAD...LIGHTLY."

With that, Spock walked back over to the science officer's station to watch Anya and Saavik.

Still surprised, Kirk turned his attention to Anya, his eyes slowly roving up and down every inch of her physical being.

"A CAPTAIN'S daughter," Kirk said to himself. "From a bloodline of Starfleet officers...might be a chance to pull rank."

Kirk eyed Anya seductively. Anya, who had been listening to every word, gave Kirk a warning glare, her eyes becoming icy as if to say, "Don't...jou...DARE."

"...Or maybe not," Kirk said, quickly turning around.

And when Bones tells Kirk that he saw them smooching, Kirk finally realizes it's true; that Chekov DOES have it in him to like a girl. Kirk just wasn't expecting Chekov to have gotten a catch like a girl from Starfleet royalty.

capta77 In reply to walvin11 [2013-05-31 19:05:06 +0000 UTC]

True, true. One's command division, the other is science division.

And with the additional fact that the second kid comes from Starfleet royalty AND that her father's a captain adds to his tensions.

It is funny! Because now he knows that the A&A officer may be relaying forensic stuff and bring in dead bodies for him to do autopsies on so that she can study the reasons why the said dead person was killed.
