Description Anya followed Kirk and Spock down to the transporter room. Kirk had told her earlier about the situation. A planet was in crisis over who would govern it: the Federation or the Klingon Empire. Unfortunately, information on the system of government or on how bad the problem was were unknown. So Anya was needed to observe the planet, find out these two matters, and, if possible, come up with an idea to put an end to the chaos. Anya had told Kirk that she would be up for the task.

As the group entered the transporter room, Anya found that Doctor McCoy was already there, waiting for them to arrive. During her first month on the Enterprise, Doctor McCoy was the only crew member who disapproved of Anya being chosen for the post of A&A Officer, and he was not afraid to make his opinions known about the matter. Doctor McCoy's remarks did leave Anya with doubt, but with the support of her acquaintances, Saavik, and of Pavel boosted her spirits and before long, she was able to ignore Doctor McCoy's negative outlook completely.

Now, as Doctor McCoy saw Anya arriving behind Kirk and Spock, he immediately took Kirk aside and said in a rather irritated tone, "Jim! Have you lost your MIND?!?!"

"Bones, why do you think I've lost--"

"I'm a DOCTOR, not a baby-sitter, dammit!" Doctor McCoy continued. "We don't need to look after one of the kids right now!"

"I'll be fine, Doctor McCoy," Anya said calmly.

"Don't pander to me, Turetsky!" Doctor McCoy said angrily. "The last thing I need right now is an inquiry from your old man about medical procedure on this ship! And if God-knows-what happens to you--"

"Relax, Bones. She's going to be fine." Kirk said as the group stepped onto the transporters. Then, glancing over at Anya, added, "Won't you, Ensign?" Following this statement, Kirk grinned at Anya and winked.

Rolling her eyes, Anya said in a firm monotone voice, "Vith all do respect, Keptin...knock eet off, please."

Seeing that his second attempt to pull rank was not going anywhere, Kirk turned to Montgomery and ordered, "Scotty, energize."

Beams of light surrounded all four members of the landing party. Only a few seconds ago, Anya had been in the transporter bay; now, she found that the landing party had arrived in an area that was somewhat squalid in appearance. Houses were dilapidated, odd-looking plants snaked along poles, on the sides of fences, and on the roofs of buildings. All of the sidewalks and roads had cracks in them. But there were also signs of improvement amidst the poor conditions: not a single window was broken, cracks on the walls were patched up well, and every building was painted with some degree of taste. From these conditions, Anya knew that the landing party was in Federation-occupied territory--a perfect place to gather information about the planet's conflict, be it out loud or in secret.

Suddenly, a voice yelled out, "HIDE! THEY'RE NOT FAR BEHIND ME! HIDE!"

The landing party turned around to see a young girl about Anya's age running towards them. She had long black hair that covered most of her thin face and was wearing a grey sweater and a grey pair of pants that were really baggy, making her stumble and fall at Kirk's feet. The girl looked up at Kirk and said quickly, "Hide yourselves! They're coming!"

"Who's coming?" Kirk asked.

"Just hide! If they see you, they'll--oh, please, just hide!" the girl said, a frightened look in what could be seen of her right brown eye.

Kirk was about to say that the landing party was not going anywhere, but Anya, seeing the fright the girl had about her, interrupted with, "Trust me, Keptin, ve'd better do vhat she's asking. Vho knows how bad zhings are here?"

"Ensign Turetsky has made a rather logical point, Captain," Spock said. "We do not know how serious the conflicts are in this area. To expose ourselves too soon would be unwise." Then, turning to the girl, Spock asked, "Will you be coming with us?"

"N-no," the girl said, her tone now more frantic than ever. "Just get yourselves out of here before they come!"

"Seriously, you've got to come with us," Kirk said, trying to lift the girl up.

"NO!" the girl yelled at Kirk. "JUST GO!"

Kirk then moved behind a few buildings, followed by Spock, McCoy, and Anya.

Seconds later, a group of girls approached the first girl, who cowered at the sight of them. Compared to their target, these girls were quite slick as far as dress went. Each one wore a black leather outfit that differed from the others. Their wavy dark brown hair was done in rather untidy styles. But one thing that the group had in common was that they were all equally menacing.

"There you are, you sad, pathetic excuse for a girl," one of the group members said. "We heard you talking to someone. Who were they and where are they?"

"I-I-I don't k-know wh-what you're t-talking about," the cowering girl stuttered as she tried to hold back the tears that were welling up in her eyes.

"Don't play games with us," another one of the group members said. "We know you're hiding Federation supporters or members. Now spit out where they are--or else."

"Th-th-there are n-n-no F-Federation members or s-s-supporters h-h-here, s-so l-leave--"

"Look, you piece of ick, we know there are more pieces of scum like you around here. Now WHERE ARE THEY??"

The girl cowered even more as the last member of the group took a sharp piece of rock and held it up to the girl's neck.

"I w-won't t-tell you," the girl stuttered.

"Fine," the first group member said. "But we'll find them. Sooner or later, we'll find those traitors."

With that, the girl was slammed brutally down onto the ground. Once the group left, the girl let her tears fall as she stood up, not even bothering to dust herself off.

From her hiding place, Anya had watched the entire scene. As she witnessed the girl being abused and scorned, Anya remembered the times in her own life when such things had happened to her back when she was still in school:

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

"Вы немного урод!"

Ten-year-old Anya turned around to face her enemies at her high school: Natasha Tsarev, Polina Belinsky, Lesya Mosalsky, and Raisa Kintsel. The hurtful words had just been uttered from Natasha, who was the leader of the group. With dirty blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a figure that most teenage girls would kill to have, Natasha claimed her place as the most popular girl in school. She saw other girls, especially those who had a certain degree of brains, as threats to her position.

As Anya clutched her books to her small, still-developing frame, Natasha approached, Polina, Lesya, and Raisa following her.

"Благодаря вам, мы не в наших классах," Natasha said angrily.

"Это не моя вина," Anya said quietly, a look of fear in her china-blue eyes.

"О, это тоже ваша вина," Lesya said, jabbing one of her perfectly manicured fingers into Anya's left shoulder. "Ты неудачник, который принадлежит одной из этих консерваторий с других вундеркиндов."

At this last sentence, Anya felt tears welling up in her eyes. She wished she could have been placed in a conservatory. True, she would have been a kind of lab rat or a cell prodded and poked in a Petri dish, but she would at least be safe from the wolves that she was now facing (and had faced) for most of her life.

"Такие люди, как вы здесь не место, Турецкий. Помните свое место и не заставляйте нас в плохом свете перед классом, как это снова."

After Natasha had said these words and stalked off with her followers behind her, Anya silently let the tears fall. She looked up at the cloudy skies for about a minute, then walked home. On her way home, Anya watched groups of her much-older peers with their friends and significant others. More tears fell from her eyes at these sights.

"Когда моя жизнь начинается?" Anya thought to herself. "Почему я дал этот дар? Некоторые подарок! Это проклятие, это то, что это такое! Я не могу быть нормальным, как и мама хочет, чтобы я! У меня нет друзей, у меня нет парня, и я урод! Я просто умный неудачник, урод, знать все это. Где ты, когда я нуждаюсь в тебе, папа?"

Anya continued to walk home in silence, the tears slowly falling from her eyes and rolling down her cheeks.

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

"Ensign? Ensign?"

Kirk's addressing her by rank temporarily brought Anya out of her flashback.

"Vhat ees eet, Keptin?"

"From what we've seen, do you know what we could do?"

At this question, Anya again recalled the same event that had happened to her seven years ago. This time, it was too much for her to take. All the years of oppression, whether it was in her homeland or at Starfleet, were once again taking a toll on her, but not in a way that she was experiencing at this very moment. Seeing the girl being tormented by Klingon supporters had made Anya want to go out and blast all the members of that group with her phaser, but she had been too scared to do so and had doubts that she would be able to fight them off. After all, there were four or five of them and only one of her. As she had these doubts, Anya felt faint, and thus began to breathe heavily. A few minutes later, Anya began experiencing nausea and clutched her stomach, breathing very heavily and very quickly.

"Ensign, what's wrong?" Kirk asked, putting his hands on Anya's shoulders.

"Jim, give her some air, please," Doctor McCoy ordered as he gently helped Anya to sit down. "Can't you see she's having a panic attack?"

At that point, Anya then threw up on the ground and began to tremble after the contents left her stomach.

"Jim, she needs to go back to the ship, pronto," Doctor McCoy said urgently.

Kirk took out his communicator, flipped it open, and said, "Kirk to Enterprise."

"Enterprise here," Nyota said.

"Send word to Scotty that Doctor McCoy and Ensign Turetsky need to be beamed aboard."

"Yes Captain," Nyota replied.

"Kirk out."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not long after this order was given were Doctor McCoy and Anya beamed back onto the ship. But before Doctor McCoy could press Anya to stay, she ran off out of the transporter room, down the corridors, and into her quarters.

Knowing that she was safe here, Anya typed in her access code, causing the door to her quarters to be locked. Then, Anya threw herself onto her bed and sobbed loudly as the flashbacks of her ill treatment in the schools of her homeland and at Starfleet Academy all flooded into her consciousness. The snide remarks, the constant tripping in the hallways, etc., it was all too much for her to bear.

For the first time in her life, Anya was truely doubting the gift (or the curse) that coursed through her veins all the days of her life.

Yep, McCoy, once again, is complaining about the fact that there's a female version of the first seventeen-year-old on the ship (and the fact that her dad's a Starfleet captain doesn't help much). And I figured Klingons were more like heavy-metal types that instilled a sense of fear.

I've always thought the same 'bout Klingons, they look very Heavy Metal, althought they love opera, but, i've always liked 'em for that hahahaha so, i'm a Klingon, i suppose ^^

LOL. Klingons love opera but they look like they belong in a Heavy Metal band.

This is really good! Little Anya kinda reminds me of little Kitty. Kitty wasnt really bullied though. More like, playfully teased for being the youngest.

Awww, poor Kitty!

She got used to it eventually. The students stopped picking on her when she got a little older. I think I should write about that point in her life.

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-26 22:41:21 +0000 UTC]

You should! Maybe have her mention it to Chekov...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kittrex In reply to capta77 [2011-04-27 00:04:30 +0000 UTC]

Maybe. I want to make it like Kitty's trying to distance herself with Chekov cause she's not sure about sharing secrets or falling in love with the crew. She is going to have to leave the Enterprise eventually cause she's only there to study. She kinda wants to protect herself from getting hurt. Maybe she'll mention a bit about herself to him indirectly. Maybe he'll see photos in her room and just piece it together. I'm just sort of doing this step by step and seeing where it leads. I think it's fun that way!

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-27 00:29:14 +0000 UTC]

Either way, it's cute!

I think, to a certain degree, Anya doesn't like revealing too much about herself to people either (unless one counts Chekov), especially with McCoy's negativity towards her.

Kittrex In reply to capta77 [2011-04-28 00:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Poor Anya. McCoy is so critical!
Kitty's a pretty shy and closed off person. Her whole life has been devoted to just her grades and now she's on a ship full of people who want to talk with her and learn about her. I imagine it must be stressing for Kitty and Anya. Their situations seem similar.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-28 00:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Quite similar.

Then again, McCoy is always complaining about everything and anything that goes wrong with the ship, as he considers space to be the ultimate danger zone.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kittrex In reply to capta77 [2011-04-28 00:44:43 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Every change on the ship he sees as a bad thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-28 00:45:49 +0000 UTC]

And he flat out does not like the idea of there being another person on the ship who is under eighteen because it means that he has to put his life in their hands in one way or another.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kittrex In reply to capta77 [2011-04-28 00:48:57 +0000 UTC]

That's mean of him! He likes Chekov! Why would Anya be different!? That is so like McCoy!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-28 03:06:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, the reason for it has to do with the fact that Anya's got family in Starfleet (her dad's a captain), And McCoy does not want to have to be facing inquiries from her dad about medical procedure on the ship, much less have the whole crew be subject to question.

A little edgy there Doc!

capta77 In reply to Kittrex [2011-04-29 04:29:18 +0000 UTC]

VERY edgy. And combine that with an overall consideration of space to be the ultimate danger zone, well, it's kinda easy to see why McCoy is complaining.

Kittrex In reply to capta77 [2011-04-29 21:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Your a great writer.
I love the Chekov cute-ness
HA!! I like how you added McCoy's famous quote "I'm a doctor, Not a ---------"

capta77 In reply to mauchtwinsfan [2011-04-23 15:16:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

I had to add in McCoy's "I'm a doctor, not a (insert noun here)" quote; it's only fitting, seeing as he doesn't like the idea that there's another kid on the ship.
