I have a standing Wacom tablet with a built-in screen. I use Photoshop and I'll have the reference material on the laptop screen, drawing on the tablet screen separately.

I also have an Asus EEE tablet that's really fun for travel and during my lunch break.

Yes, yes they certainly do.
I was able to get mine on a discount for $700. I'm sure you can find nice used ones, but I doubt you'll fine any at $500 or lower.
COMPLETELY worth it, though
