This makes (us) introverted people seem like a reclusive, separate species to be approached with caution and care. Which is closer to the truth than I'd like to admit

I just find it odd that there are so many of us and yet so few people understand how we work. It's not like this is a new thing.

Actually, it was commonly known back in the 1970s and early 1980s, at least. Β
Learning about the differences between strong introverts and strong extroverts -- and learning how to respect both poles as well as the many people who are in-between -- was part of public school curriculum. Β A student couldn't pass that part of the lesson without learning first about introversion and extroversion.
I will admit that I have not been in grade school for a while, but I have difficulty believing that people have forgotten today what was common knowledge relatively recently.

Right? Usually I see these "understanding introverts" things boil it down to "they like the quiet".

I think the reason introverts are seen as a "new thing" is because of the internet giving us a voice for the first time in human history. NOW we're forming communities and crawling out of the woodwork into a new, unexplored place, and all the extroverts who have always run the show are thinking "Who the hell are THESE people??"

That's a bit of an unjustified "siege" mentality.

The ones that do understand are the ones that don't demonstrate that they don't understand and thus remain, rather sadly, unnoticed?

Perhaps you could start by trying to get your classmates?
Understanding should not be a one-sided effort. Β People work best with mutual respect, mutual understanding, and mutual accommodation -- the opposite of what this pic advocates, unfortunately.

I get my classmates, They like to be around other people. I get that most people take joy in being in groups and surrounding themselves in many friends. I personally would prefer one friend who's cool with sitting back to back in mutual silence doing our own things. Yet no matter how hard I try my classmates saw me as "weird" and "anti social" for not wanted to go to large loud gatherings.

There needs to be a word for people who are introvert but also extrovert... or neither one. For example, I 'absorb' the feeling of the crowd when I'm in it and can feel the vibes of my neighbors, but I don't need that interaction to be energetic or happy. I'm a very solo person but am perfectly fine in a crowd, as well. I can be happy without needing a reason, as long as I'm not sleep-deprived.

I'm fine in a crowd as long as most of the people in the crowd don't consistently need me to pay attention to them specifically and just let me be. Do you mean like that?
π: 0 β©: 1
TapSkill In reply to NYPinTA [2013-05-12 09:29:05 +0000 UTC]
No, I think that sounds like an attention deficit disorder. lol Or at least you lose interest in what they are saying.
I meant I don't need people to be happy but would have no problem being with tons of people as long as they are not aggressively mean and are not dangerous or hazardous to me.

This is great! Personally I'm more leaning towards extrovert, but also have some introvert nudges, I'm kinda an in-between. I get exhausted from too much company, it gobbles up my energy, but I love being hyperactive and energetic now and then and thrive under social contact.

Hm, this is actually rather accurate when I think about it. It's pretty exhausting to be around people, especially since I try to get out every so often to maintain what few friendships I have.
A cute and humorous spin on social anxiety X3 Awesome X3
