I actually find this a touching moment. <3 It's not stealing someone's kid, in my opinion. But maybe this is a cultural thing.
For example, a friend of mine has at least 2 woman friends she refers to as mother (one is "mama", the other is "mommy" to keep them apart if I remember right), even though she has a biological mother as well. Simply as a way of saying she's so close to them, she refers to them as family.
And my dad sometimes calls our old next-door neighbor "his mother", because she's like a mother/grandma to him, and he's taking care of her (she's very old) like a good son would. He actually tried to make me accept her as my grandmother but I couldn't, because she's not that close to me. You can't force family roles. But if a family role works, why not?
