Captain Marvel was a white man. This Captain Marvel is a total tokenized rip off of the original.
There was a second Captain Marvel, who was a black woman, but she was a totally different character, different costume, origins, personality, powers, etc. Only the name was the same, and she wasn't a SJW icon.Β
Both were more popular in the comics that the tokenized Danvers version though. More important as well.

1st Captain Marvel - beat Thanos.
2nd Captain Marvel - lead the Avengers.
3rd Captain Marvel - got put into a coma by Rogue for decades.
