You will regret giving me permission to ask questions xD
I'll try not to be too bothersome I swear

1. Backgrounds? I don't even now where to begin with them ;_;
2. Shading? I've only really tried cell-shaded and other people I talk to say it's pretty easy I just gotta be not so ocd about i guess.

But seriously Thank you ;w;

Trust me, I've taught plenty of people with a lot of questions.

Backgrounds are difficult for anyone who isn't used to building environments. And often a time, the biggest challenge is to successfully have a character or object interact with the environment without it looking like you copy and pasted it from a different source. My suggestion is fluidity. Art professors in college will hound any student about this, the fluid motion of the wrist that will make your artwork seem more organic and natural. And looking at your artwork you have little problem with the fluidity of the brush, all you have to do is incorporate it into the background as well as the subject of the piece to make it seem like they're interacting seamlessly. You probably notice that not all of my lines are completely straight, nor are they all connected in some panels of work that I do in my comics. It's a common conception that in order to create a successful background shot, you have to imitate perspective and straight edging perfectly when, really, that's not the case (at least not for me). I focus more on what feels comfortable for my hand to create rather than whether or not I'm representing a building or a room in perfect alignment to perspective lines (which I never use).

References also helped me. Tons and tons of references. Even most other artists will tell you that background shots require they google search a lot of reference pictures so they can capture the right anatomy of a certain building or street view. And one last item for backgrounds is detail. Try to capture as much of the little details of an environment as you can to make it seem more interactive. If it's a field, put a few trees here and there, or maybe a boulder. If it's a bedroom, try not to stick with just the typical bed, closet, and lamp; add more personality like trash around the computer table, a vanity mirror, books strewn on the floor. Something that describes the history of the environment as much as character design describes the history of that character.Β

Now as far as shading goes, my biggest suggestion is observation. I've told many a friend that artists just might be some of the creepiest people they will ever meet because if there's one thing we love to do, it's people watch. simply to observe how shadows and light interact with them and their environment so we might better represent that in a piece, of course.Β
But through observation I have learned to be more forgiving with shading. This goes back to the whole fluidity point I brought up earlier. My technique for a natural looking shadow is to start the picture off in black and white (You'll be able to color it and tweek it with some photoshop magic later) to get the shading right before you color anything in. Just... sort of randomly scribble shadow wherever your mind believes it needs to be and go back to touch it up once you're done.

If you want an example for this, here's an... old ass speedpaint video I did about a year ago:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7HAIG…
