Description Here in this first part we discuss exactly "What is Autism?" Also, in the series, I hope to regularly do things such as ask readers certain question and hope for responses. It may even become a regular thing.

For those interested in the DSM-5 criteria for Autism, check out the link here: www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/hcp-…

I really would say it is a part of who I am. Sure, I don't know everything about autism or how it affects me but it's just a part of who I am. Not really sure how else to describe it.

Also, please don't use a Rainman reference again, it's a very offensive look at autism, and that's what most people think of about autism.

Sorry, it wasn't my intention to be offensive. I don't plan to reference the movie again

When I found out I had autism, I thought that it was to blame for all the teasing and bullying I'd experienced as a kid, why I never seemed to fit in a crowd. I felt like I was something messed up and that it ruined my life. But it took quite a while until I realized that it made my personality, my view on things, my thinking. In reality, it makes me "me." It shapes who I am , just like anyone else's personality, except with a couple of extra quirks. I still is hard sometimes to relate to certain things because I either don't understand or my mind just doesn't work around it, but it also makes me unique. My diagnosis is Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, PDDNOS, but it can also stand for Perfectly Detailed and Designed by God Nothing Other than Spectacular. While it's the "junk drawer of autism", it gives me a lot of tools too!

When I was informed that I have Asperger's (a high-functioning form of autism), I tried to pretend it was nothing because I knew little about what it was or how it affected me and it sounded as though there was something wrong with me. But as my parents got me involved with support groups, I began to realize that I couldn't run away from it and now that I'm older, I've come to terms with it and when now that I'm older, I look at how far I've come and what I have accomplished, even though I still struggle sometimes with this high form of autism, and it reassures me that it doesn't have to hold me back.

As a kid, autism (which I knew nothing about at the time) meant immunity to peer pressure.  Simply put, I didn't want to learn how to fit in; none of the kids shared my interests, and they seemed stupid to me anyway.  Also, I liked my personal space, I was free to do whatever I wanted there.

What autism means to me is the exact same as what my brain means to me. Something I don't pay any attention to in the slightest and something I could've lived my whole, normal life without knowing of it's existence, despite it literally being a part of me ever since I was born.
The only difference is that autism itself is pointless, as it's just a fancy way of saying you're anti-social, or better yet, just saying you don't like people. (Which is something most people do)

And just for reference, vaccinations do NOT, I repeat, do NOT cause Autism.  All 'links' between the two have been disproven.  You NEED to get your children vaccinated.
