Description I got some great critique on this thanks internet! And Mik.

A rendering exercise, so don't mind the focus piont. Lets just say that the tail leads to his face.

I am trying to render realistically, or more so than usually. Critique me and tell me what I can do to make it even better!

What?

I used photoshop for this, and I also used a few references for face anatomy. Reference is good, but I am bad at using it.

A critique -

I like the concept- captive merman/creature. The highlights are very crisp on his body, right where they need to be. The illusion of the reflective water is well done, but could be a bit brighter on the walls, considering the levels of light near the lower portion of the piece. The tail also appears to disappear into sections of the tank that, from where the wall appears to be, shouldn't exist...

Something about the tank itself feels empty. It could just be me, but there seems to be a bit too much negative space underwater, around the area of his tail. Perhaps a continuation of the wall pattern showing clearly on the opposite end of the tank would help. You could also consider working with some light-based textures to the glass itself, or the walls, to break up the negative space. Possibly even constraints of some sort, since he appears to be held against his will. Or some monitoring/scientific research equipment. The small sign to the right is a bit too close to the outside edge as well, and pulls my eyes away from the piece.

Otherwise, it's very well done!

Hey, I think I had a dream like this once xD I was a mermaid in a tank. Anyhoo. Lovely colors, and I love the sense of light. The 'Chamber 06' sign is a neat touch, though I didn't even notice it at first. The one thing I would say that bugs me a bit is that while there are highlights where water droplets would be running off his skin, he otherwise doesn't look all that wet. Perhaps add a little shine and make his hair more weighed down? Nice work!

That might be true, he could look more wet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hello.
I like how real the top part looks it's amazing!
I think the tail is a bit long, Maybe shortening it would make it seem more real.
I like how the reflection of the water is on the wall!
Though I think the light coming from nowhere is a little strange.

if you want it realistic, then you need to work with sharper highligts.

The highlighting you have now is pretty soft, and while that is great for adding atmosphere, it doesn't really do much in terms of realism.

I'd look up pictures of wet skin or, well, you know, just dip your finger in water, to get and idea of how it look. when something is wet it usually gains some solid highlighting.
I think it was the Viskas drawing you did, where you worked with a very fine rim-lighting that gave the fur a thin white edge.

It's basically similar to that.

Otherwise, great picture.
