It's a bug/small animal repellant actually. It's for keeping snakes and scorpions away from his camp.

If he is a plant... does he have a flower instead? And what species is the other guy? His arms look like he just had digged out a fireants' nest with bare hands.

He grew from a flower, and has petal-like plumage on his head and face, but he does not "Have a flower" in the sense I think you mean it, no. He is not a complete organism, he is just the fruit.
