Description
I picked up this two-car DMU set at my model train club's Buy & Sell/Open Day for $20!It was sold as a non-running unit, but like most things I pick up cheaply, it just needed a clean!
This is now a functioning two-car set and looks very good on my layout, and fits in the station area better than a loco-hauled service which would be limited to two coaches on my layout.
This DMU could easily fit with a middle carriage as well - and I plan to buy the Tri-ang middle carriage for this set in the future.
I think that if I had ballast on the track, and a background behind the station scene, this could be a pretty realistic layout photograph!

I really want a 101 for my layout, since I have a DMU platform. I prefer the two car units myself, but I wish you luck in finding the center car!

I will have the option of running it as a 2 or 3 car set.
To me, it doesn't look quite long enough as 2-car set, especially at the model train club's layout where the distances between stations are so long.
At home it will look right either way due to the compactness of my layout; as long as there is a cab at each end I think they look OK.

True! And you could in theory make a 10 car DMU that can't move with your BR crimson coaches too, the advantage to using regular couplings in a DMU.
I'd love to get my hands on one, but I can't seem to find any online at a reasonable price. Fingers crossed that there's one inside the box of Triang/Hornby stock that my local museum recently acquired.

I doubt you're likely to find a bargain online for a common model train like this, especially if you can only find examples in the UK which is the case for a lot of Tri-ang items.
What I like to do is spend $100 or so on a large collection of trains that has some items I'm interested in, and beforehand work out that I can sell off what I don't want and break even or make a profit.
A lot of my collection was acquired this way and so I rarely *actually* spend any money! This was one of the rare occasions where I will have actually spent money, however I will be able to get back a portion of it.
I spent $65 all up, including the $20 on this set, and I did acquire some things to sell such as some track and a few goods wagons.

I had a look on EBay and found some much better ones; Turns out that the first two were complete sets with the original controllers.
I do that too! And occasionally I find lots from relatives and other people I know, it feels good to know that it's being put to use.
