This reminds me of an old Bugs Bunny feature where he's taking this penguin to Antarctica and they stop through the Amazon jungle and they're both in the pot and he's looking at him with this sour face and says, "You and your shortcuts."

That's sort of where I got the idea. It is a common theme, but knowing Ron and food. They got the invitation and he accepted without thinking. When they started talking about tying up loose ends would have been the time to run.
