Description
I decided to remake the map of my new ThunderClan territory so that we would have a visual. I am very visual, so this will help me for sure. I scaled it down slightly, but the territory is very large. The big words are landmarks that all the clans would know while the small words are more ThunderClan landmarks. The camp is made up of three giant rocks; each has a name and purpose. There is Sunning Stone, a place to sun and catch lizards; High Stone, a lookout point; and Claw Stone, this is the rock that all apprentices mark when they start their training and again when they finish. It is part of the apprentice and warrior ceremony. The smaller rock on the inside functions the same for medicine cats. The rocks create three openings to the actual camp and its actually quite a sunny place; it is not cave-like at all (it may look like it).
The west passage leads to the Cloud Lake (named because it is so still that the clouds reflect on it) and Willow Hollow. This is where training usually takes place as it is rather flat and free of foliage under the willow. Silent Forest is an area with very thick undergrowth; a ThunderClan cat is right at home hunting there, but others might have difficulty. The Oak Forest is more open with meadowland and fields. Often, apprentices will race to the Pointed Rock as a warm up for the day.
The Shell Print Rocks are another huge stone feature; it is very difficult to hunt there and cats have fallen to their deaths in the past. The rocks are home to huge spiral shell imprints along with many smaller ridged shell markings (I like rocks, so I made this my ideal territory). Red Hollow is a good hunting area and a bit less dangerous than the rocks themselves.
Mouse Meadow is disputed territory. It is a sort of valley and its very prey rich; mice thrive there year round. ThunderClan most often has claim of it, but sometimes ShadowClan takes it for a season or two. It is believed by ShadowClan that the lack of this hunting ground is what caused the famine; many ShadowClan warriors think Dragonstar is cruel for taking it during their time of need, but ThunderClan thinks that she saved them from the effects of the famine. Palestar and Dragonstar will be ripping Mouse Meadow back and forth for ages.
Thunder Falls is named for ThunderClan (because ThunderClan is full of themselves) and the booming sound it makes. It is a common right of passage for apprentices to leap the falls. Although it is highly discouraged, by mentors and leader alike, for the danger it poses, apprentices uphold the tradition in secret. Whoever can leap the falls gets bragging rights, whoever can't... risks a steep fall.
Old Stone Place is a castle (cats don't know what a castle is) ruin with and eery air about it; apprentices believe it to be haunted and the ghost of Bloodclaw (a sort of boogeyman for kits based on the story of Goldenpelt) is said to reside there. The cliffs near the area are a favorite hang out spot for Flintwhisker, Ridgefrost and Sunnystripe. Flint once entered the ruin as an apprentice and proved the stories false, so the three friends are not afraid of it, others tend to stay away.
The Adder Marshes are not a favorite hunting area for ThunderClan cats, but a lot of conflicts with ShadowClan happen there. The ShadowClan hunting patrols often chase frogs and toads across the border. As is in the name, there are many snakes in the marshes and only experienced warriors patrol there. The Tall Aspens are near the area; there is little undergrowth in the aspens, so ThunderClan cats find themselves chasing birds there more often than not. (I think there is a twoleg place farther north...)
The Great Oak is a novice hunting ground and usually assessments are performed there. the roots are very large and form a hollow under the tree. Near here is Stepping Stones and the Minnow River; it gets rather shallow after the falls and then flows deeper as it crosses into RiverClan and WindClan territory. (I'm pretty sure we wanted a gorge between the two so the river probably gets pretty fierce up ahead)
The Shipwreck marks the RiverClan border and it is never disputed. RiverClan cats prefer to fish in their river, so they rarely cross into conflict with ThunderClan. ThunderClan warriors enjoy the beach, but leave the swimming to RiverClan. Also on the beach are the Caves. This area is normally avoided as it doesn't offer much hunting and the caves can get dangerous if the tide comes in...
Pine Hills borders the meeting place, Four Stones. ThunderClan warriors cross the hills to reach each gathering. Gatherings are day long events in Endless Storm; it helps for clan peace and healthy rivalry between them. They will spend the day of the full moon, from dawn until the leader's speak at moon-high, telling stories, engaging in games and competitions and hunting together. This is all in the spirit of the Elemental Cats and how they saved the clans. (one of them is still alive: Patchwind)
Well, that's pretty much all of it. I hope to complete the other territories as well... we'll see how that goes.

May I use this map of the four clans for a fanfic? I will give all credit to you and direct them to your account.

This map is already in use for StarClanCats, sorry. It is our own story.

Alright then got any advise on how I could make one?

Well, I tend to start with rivers and bodies of water; cats would want to live near accessible water after all. Then I add where I want the camps to be and decide what sort of areas each clan might like to live in, for example, Shadowclan lives in a copse of pine trees with one or two fallen trees, so they are able to weave their walls into the pine branches and take shelter in the hollow tree trunk. I pick some landmarks i'd like on each clan such as a rocky cliff area or a waterfall. Decide where the trees would be most prevalent (probably larger forests around the areas with water). That's basically it for design. For color, I use photoshop, but you can use any program.Β
If this seems hard to understand, there are some map making tutorials on youtube that could help.

how long did it take you to draw this (sketching and planning as well)? it's so pretty!

A while actually. The planning took a few hours, but it had been in the works for about a year. The sketch was the most fun and the quickest part and It only took an hour or two. Coloring it digitally was at least another two hours. So... in all? Probably a 6 hour concept.
I really love doing maps ^^
Thanks!

Looks great! Now I've really got a challenge for a project lol. And ThunderClan certainly has a large area to roam! This next story just gets more and more exciting.

I have a project ahead with RiverClan too. I know that Kou wanted the camp to be next to or behind a waterfall (I want to respect his wishes so that we all have a somewhat personalized area), but there is also supposed to be a gorge somewhere. I guess I'll fork the river and make it known that ThunderClan is pretty much a highland... That would make sense.
I really like our new story ideas and I will have fun playing ThunderClan and ShadowClan conflicts ^^

Yeah, I remember the gorge was the border between Wind and River, making traveling between the two impossible unless you go to Four Stones first. Β Maybe after a storm a tree loosens and forms a bridge between the two, but crossing it it considered unsafe. Β I'll have to do my own WindClan map akin to this. ^^ Β (The old one I did is no longer accurate, I think.)

In mine the river goes to ShadowClan, so I figure it crosses into WindClan (they all need river access!) and then forks; one side forms the gorge and the other goes into RiverClan perhaps. I'll draft it out and see what I come up with. We can all decide how Four Stones and the Moon Branch areas look.
I look forward to seeing WindClan ^^

That's what makes sense to me too. So it flows through Shadow and then splits into Wind and River?

CaptainMorwen In reply to TheNameIsWater-Wea [2015-05-29 18:00:37 +0000 UTC]
I think it will split at Four Stones... So it would meander into ShadowClan how far you want it and then loop back toward the middle I figure.

Okay! I can do that fairly easily. I think I'll have it split in Pine Hills then. One end feeds the Adder Marsh I think. Then the other goes towards four stones.

You can incorporate more river systems too if you want more water access.

I might make a lazy river and small lake come out of the mountains behind ShadowClan.
