I really like the design of the Excelsior Class starships; and it was inevitible that the replacement for the Constitution class Enterprise would be an Excelsior. Aside from Generations (a movie I really enjoyed BTW) we don't learn much about the Enterprise B. But her maiden voyage likely branded her among the superstitious as an Unlucky Ship....After all, the Living Legend, James T. Kirk died trying to save her, while her Captian Harriman looked on with no clue as to what to do. I always felt this was unfair to Harriman--he didn't get to be captain of any Federation starship (let alone one named Enterprise) by being a mindless idiot or reacting to dangerous situations by standing like a deer in the headlights.

Anyhow...I wanted to show Enterprise on approach to a class M world, most likely as a way for the Federation to "Show the Colors"
