Brian stared at the woman....thing...bot?...android...that stood before him. She had been standing there, motionless, since he entered his office. His new office.

A new job. New city. Completely uprooted from his old life. It was good, really, as he had nothing in his past to be missed. He had devoted everything to becoming the top in his field. No relationships outside of work. And now it was paying off.

"Almost a bot myself" he thought to himself as he examined this...creature.

When he hired on with the firm, they told him he would be provided with an assistant. Full time, all-time, assistant.

In the email introducing him to his new job: "'She' will travel with you to and from work. The apartment we are providing has accommodations for 'her' as well. A true personal assistant that has few needs other than being your right hand, whenever, whatever, you need. Think of 'her' as an autonomous 'Alexa'. She can file, cook, clean, take and make calls and appointments, and can even function as a workout partner. Whatever is needed to make your life easier."

"Does it have an on switch?"

Also in the email: "We have taken the precaution to order these units with a special feature, designed for use by corporations such as ours. Though a fully functioning model, they can't be ordered to perform lewd or sexual acts. We find that this alleviates a multitude of problems, whether it be a jealous spouse or girlfriend, or merely someone getting all freaky with their assistant on company time."

"It...she...certainly has red hair. I wonder if that's standard?"

"One last thing concerning your new assistant: As they are learning machines, equipped with the latest generation AI that continually adjust to their specific owners, she will be yours to keep. Consider it a sign-on gift, or bonus. In the event that you ever leave our firm, she goes with you. The time and money required to reset and reprogram these units is more than the cost of buying a new unit for the next user. "Do you even have a name?" he said out loud without realizing.

"Makenzie. That is the name I was randomly assigned. As my primary, you may change it at any time you wish."

Brian jumped when she spoke, then collected himself. As a software engineer, he was perfectly aware that machines are always listening.

"Well, Makenzie, I see no reason to change anything at the moment, unless we can shorten it some. Perhaps we can give you the nickname 'Maks'."

"As you wish, sir. May I assist you in any way?"
