No, not Bonura, the Z3 is Tim Eldred's work.

You are correct about Frank Bonura, not being the original designer/artist. Seems he's responsible for deck plans for the ship. However, the only info I can pull up on original designers/artists is...

The version, by John Paul Lona (from page 46 of "The Star Wars Planets Collection" by West End Games), was based off of the work of Christina Wald (from page 33 of "Stock Ships" by West End Games).

If you have proof of Tim Eldred being the original designer/artist of this, please send it to me (cause I can't find any), and I'll gladly update the info. Otherwise, I'll update it with Christina Walds name, instead.

Right.
OK.
The Z3 originally appears in PotG:V1 published 1991.
It reappears in PotGC published 1994.
Walds illustration is from stock ships, published 1997.

So unless you think WEG and Wald were sitting on her illustration for more then six years, then without any shadow of a doubt Wald is certainly NOT the original designer. Time's arrow only goes one way.

Who is? So, over the years I've had the good fortune to be in contact with several of the WEG alumni, including several of their artists, Vilardi, Carlilse and Caswell most recently, but also writers and editors. I had a long, long discussion with Eric Trautmann about WEG's policies on illustrations. According to him, and backed up by others, WEG did not like to pay their illustrators. Most contributors were lucky to get credit. On that specific image there is simply no way it's a JPL. It is unlikely to be Tim Eldred in actuality. What is most likely is that it was one of dozens of people who did such work who went uncredited. However, Tim Eldred is the only person credited as an artist for the volume, and as such is most properly referred to as the original artist, irrespective of how the image is credited on later pages.
Sure, that's hearsay, and not proof. Take of it what you like, I'm far less concerned about whether JPL, ED or some random doodler gets the credit as I am pointing out that Frank Bonura CERTAINLY doesn't.

As for his doing the deckplans, well, he was part of a team, sure, but the primary creator was Mike Marinic. FVB was so obnoxious that everyone else left and didn't fight his claims of sole authorship. Again, take that for whatever you may think it's worth, I doubt FVB left anything much out there as evidence. This is a big part of why I baulk at his being given credit (for anything, really, but especially) for someone else's work.

Calm down. I just didn't want to give the wrong person the credit. And if I have proof of someone doing the art, at some point. But no proof of another, I'd ask for it, before just giving the credit to someone else. So don't take my wanting proof as an attack.

Now...Thank you for pointing me at "Star Wars: Planets of the Galaxy - Volume One", As I have that book. Here's what I found in the credits...

Graphic Artists: Cathleen Hunter, and John Paul Lona
Illustrator: Allen Nunis
Interior Art: Tim Eldred

After finding the 3-Z class "The Black Butcher", on page 37. The name next to the graphic, is John Paul Lona.

So if this is the original, then the artist/designer is John Paul Lona.

Thank you for bringing this to may attention. And helping with the research. That one book, did the trick.
