You have done a wonderful painting and you well deserved the DD, but the cat you painted is not a persian, it's an odd-eyed Turkish Angora...
And, this is the link in Wikipedia, if you want...

I bow before your talent and congratulations again!!

here's a link or two for your viewing pleasure also: [link] [link] and thanks, but actually, one reason i have critique disabled is cause i do not take it too well, totally uninspires AND unimpresses me. i am here to inspire and be inspired, not correct others, be corrected, or to be put in my place. and just so ya know, this is a show quality odd-eyed white persian, which you can go the the cat fancier's website and look at the standard for proof.[link]
ae turkish angora actually has a longer nose, smaller eyes, larger ears, and a more narrow face. an odd eyed white persian has a wide face, huge round eyes, nose centered and placed high, and is just what i painted.(been commissioned to do this for close to 30 years now... sorta do have an idea about what i do... even if it doesn't show) the only thing that remotely made this resemble an angora would simply be the color of the eyes and fur. the structure of this cat which i painted is completey different from an angora. everything else is to the tee and actually is a persian as i state, painted from a photo of a grand champion odd eyed white persian as requested by my proud cat paintings owner. thank ya just the same!

and of course. . . APPOLOGY happily accepeted and i gladly forgive... human imperfection are natural, i naturally make mistakes all the time too! (no spanking required!!!
)

There's something a bit weird about the cat's face - like someone else said, his eyes seem to be looking in two different directions - but the rest of the picture is really well done. I love the flowers and especially the brickwork. I feel like I could just reach out and run my fingers over the window sill.

o k a y... i suppose comming from someone with a gallery such as yours, perhaps i should take "weird" as a compliment of sorts maybe??? "weird" way to say something nice in my opinion, but many time persians eyes even in photographs, or in real life, do seem to be looking a bit odd and sometimes even appear as if they are looking in different directions. to be able to portray them in paint isn't as simple as manipulating a photo, so i - as well as many others - including this paintings owner - consider my attempt with paint to portray, even the cat, to also be quite well done - reguardless of what you and any other might chose to think or say! even if you don't... i pat myself on the back for an over all job well done, rather than beat me up for imperfections which only God can avoid. i am an artist after all, not a God!
π: 0 β©: 2
carefulwhatyawishfor In reply to carefulwhatyawishfor [2006-01-20 05:13:55 +0000 UTC]
i hoped 'weird" was an off handed compliment since you also have some weird work in your gallery, but see you clearly meant it negatively. i accept your apology as well as i accept and see my imperfections and i see them much clearer than anyone else ever will. i am here to inspire and be inspired, not to critisize. that is why i have critique disabled on my work and i would never say anything negative to others. that is a viciuos cycle i prefer to avoid. much like a shark frnezie. i wish you would see the difference in making a positive statement not accompanied with a negative one. i actually have an issue with negativity in general. i in no way what so ever said anything "snide" at all about photomanipluations, so you can forget that. that blanket statement would mean you have a problem with traditional art and i think that is as false. i simply can copy, paste, and edit a photo to achieve perfection, much easier than i can with paint. negativity begats negativity and positivity begats positivity. i soar highest with positivity and am weighed down with negativity and believe you might also, as well. best wishes!

I am sorry that you've taken what I said in such a negative way. I would have hoped that you would have seen the overall positive tone of what I said - I really do have a lot of respect for the picture, as I indicated in my original post. I don't own a persian cat and am not a cat person, so if you say they have odd eyes (in shape, not colour), I will take your word for it.
Obviously you have an issue with people making negative comments on your pictures (otherwise why would you be making snide comments about photomanipulations?), so forget I said anything.

thanks. haven't a clue, just did the painting, didn't write the description, guess you'll have to ask the writer, unless it is in reference to the butterfly which might not be so noticable in the thumbnail as the writer states about the 'fun detail'?

Oh no, now you flatter me! Nope, that's just good critique manners pounded into me from AP art studio. Besides, it's often easier to see flaws in someone else's work rather than my own (that doesn't mean they're not there, though....). Also, it just bugs me when people just post, "Hey that's cool" without tellling me why. I mean, it's really nice of them to post but that doesn't tell me why they like it or give me anything that I can use to improve my skills.

funny what a different world we each live in huh? i feel so uninspired by insults to others or my work. i am here to inspire and be inspired and hope i can make others day happier and selfishly wish for the same. haven't a clue about 'AP art studio' manners, but do know my momma always said it was good manners to "say nothing at all if you have nothing nice to say" and "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch" so i do my best to keep a lid on insults and critiqueing. i prefer to inspire others and to stay uplifted and remain inspired to paint, as my only means of support for myself and my handicapped son. seems if one person makes a critical comment - they grow, kinda like a shark frenzie - or one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch. is a bad habit in my world, even if not in the AP art studio world.
i enjoy praise and compliments and have no use for insults. not here for an "ego blowjob" but not here to be shot down either. i post to share what i enjoy doing with others and most of all to have an online archive of what i do, not to be corrected. once i post a deviation it is done, and usually sold, not to be improved upon or edited, just enjoyed (or passed by if it isn't enjoyed.) (jsyk, if i post in scraps you can critisize me, but that is old junk i did as a kid and wanted to share with young artists who asked me to share, so some i don't even have anymore and most i really have no interest in improving!) i personally see and know my own imperfections better than anyone else ever will, and certainly gain nothing from having others point them out for me to dwell more on. makes me wanna get a 'real job' where i can be a robot and not have to be inspired to paint or dwell on my imperfections. think i will never paint again when i get shot down. serves no good purpose in my world.(i fit perfectly into that overly sentimental/sensitive artist mold, hope i never cut off an ear over my oversensitivity!lol) i have 'critique disabled' for that very reason! guess low artistic self-esteme is a flaw in me you are lucky not to be "blessed with". i do see everyone else's flaws too, but i know how much i dislike my own faults, so i would never want to point them out in others. i figure since only God is perfect, why should i expect myself or others to be also. besides, who has any right to judge others anyway, critiquing it is pure opinion and noones opinion is law or justified to be pushed off on others. i dislike selling apainting to then have it insulted here as if my client used poor judgement in thier choice to buy it or those who suggest it and who chose it for a DD, or who appreciate it, so to critisize my work is also to critisize all those who don't. i stand up for me and for them.
to me, is interesting to see the results when a compliment is paid along with an insult, compared to a pure compliment. wish i could start a artist compliment club to spread the joy and inspiration i feel and hjave seen in others when critisizing is avoided. must be a real artist habit. may be why i will never be a real artist. som edo it and some don't and i wanna join a manners club for us who don't! like two different worlds. my momma also always taught me "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" so since i don't like to be critisized, i don't do it to others. when i begin to critisize others, guess then they would be justified to critisize me, but frankly it is a vicious circle i prefer to avoid. is funny to me the few who take the liberty of insulting me sure do object when i stand up for myself as if 'they can dish it out but can't take it!'!
positivity grows the positivity - negativity grows negativity!
all skills improve most with practise, so rather than spending time critiqueing, i have seen that time is best spent practicing, as i strive to do! best wishes!

when i grow up i used to want to be a real artist, now i think i will never paint again because no matter how hard i try - my best has never been good enough and after 30 years of painting i must be blind to think it ever will be. wonder why i ever bother sometimes. i quit!
criΒ·tique (krΔ-tΔk')
n.
A critical review or commentary, especially one dealing with works of art or literature.
A critical discussion of a specified topic.
The art of criticism.
tr.v. Usage Problem., -tiqued, -tiquΒ·ing, -tiques.
To review or discuss critically.
[French, from Greek kritikΔ (tekhnΔ, (art) of criticism, feminine of kritikos, critical. See critic.]
USAGE NOTE Critique has been used as a verb meaning βto review or discuss criticallyβ since the 18th century, but lately this usage has gained much wider currency, in part because the verb criticize, once neutral between praise and censure, is now mainly used in a negative sense. But this use of critique is still regarded by many as pretentious jargon, although resistance appears to be weakening. In our 1997 ballot, 41 percent of the Usage Panel rejected the sentence As mock inquisitors grill him, top aides take notes and critique the answers with the President afterward. Ten years earlier, 69 percent disapproved of this same sentence. Resistance is still high when a person is critiqued: 60 percent of the Usage Panel rejects its use in the sentence Students are taught how to do a business plan and then are critiqued on it. Thus, it may be preferable to avoid this word. There is no exact synonym, but in most contexts one can usually substitute go over, review, or analyze.β’Note, however, that critique is widely accepted as a noun in a neutral context; 86 percent of the Panel approved of its use in the sentence The committee gave the report a thorough critique and found it both informed and intelligent.

I only meant it to be a suggestion because sometimes another person can have another perspective on a piece that will give you some good ideas. I didn't mean it to be an insult, just a friendly suggestion. Critiquing can be a positive thing if everyone respects the artist, the work, and the direction they're trying to head in but I also agree that it can get very ugly if even one person doesn't do that. I also want you to understand that I'm not trying to reject your opinion, I've just been surrounded by a very encouraging and critique-oriented community since the beginning of my artistic career so I try to give suggestions when I see art and offer a perspective that perhaps they hadn't thought of before.
One thing you should also understand is that you don't have to be some hoity-toity art major to be an artist. Remember, Van Gogh never sold a painting in his entire life but he kept painting. I also know of an artist in my hometown who was never taught how to paint, she just picked up some materials one day and started painting. She shuns all the galleries and displays her stuff in coffee shops, yet she's one of the most popular artists in town. Really it just comes down to whether it means something to you, and to hell with whatever anyone else thinks. Don't focus on the flaws in your artwork, focus on the strong points and work from there. That doesn't mean you should pretend they're not there because that will create a blindspot, but your work is strong enough that people don't see the flaws. You got a Daily Deviation, for frak's sake!! Obviously somebody out there likes your work!

Wow-what a beautiful painting-it's so smoothly textured, it gives the overall composition a lovely atmosphere
I love how the cat's posed-it gives the eyes a nice glaze at that angle with the subtle window glint on it
My focus is squarely on the cat, but I've always been a cat fan hehe
The butterfly is also very nicely done-and the flowers are good with good texturing on the bricks around
All in all excellent work and congratulations on the deviation I shall add as a favourite
I cannot BELIEVE this doesn't have more comments
