Yes, yes it is. It's a pity ;n; I will have to come up with another word for what I am, one that does not carry negative connotations. I think "fan" would work, really. Lots of people are fans of things but "fangirl" carries such a slew of negative implications, like squealing, complete obsession, Mary Sue insertion, yaoi-worship in some cases..."fanboy" doesn't really have those although it does have a certain quality of lameness to it; and it mostly has comic and sci-fi implications.
Even though I'm female and therefore a "fan girl" ("fan woman" actually), I think I'll start calling myself just a fan.
