Description The Mechanipedes (not their real name, but the name most people know them by)Β were once a proud and thriving species, the oldest and most advanced civilisation in their universe, masters of interstellar and interdimensional travel, astroengineering and robotics. At some point in their long history, they began modifying their brains and bodies with cybernetic implants and prosthetics until they became more mechanical than organic and functionally immortal.

Then the Scourge came. The Mechanipedes put up fierce resistance, utilising all of their scientific and technological capabilities, even devising a way to weaponize supernovas, but nothing could halt the spread of the implacable, genocidal invaders. After a long and bitter struggle, the Scourge overran their universe, resulting in the deaths of quintillions of sentient beings.

The survivors fled in Starroot ships, giant space trees, capable of interdimensional travel. Each vessel was several kilometres long and covered in a dense canopy of leaves and branches, providing a habitat for the Mechanipede refugees, as well as a self-replenishing source of nourishment and energy. Such was their desperate flight, they ended up scattered across the multiverse.

The Mechanipede pictured here, Kade, is a member of Nyx Nova's pirate crew. Like many Mechanipede refugees, he fell into the clutches of the interdimensional slaver gang known as the Indigo Gorgons, who sold him to the Panjandrums as an indentured labourer. He met Nyx on the factory world Travail and used his knowledge of interdimensional drive systems to help her build a spliceship out of parts they scavenged from the planet's scrapyards. They escaped Travail together and he has remained a part of her crew ever since. He spends much of his time floating in zero gravity in the ship's many access tunnels, fussing over the vessel's glitchy systems, or as he puts it "trying to keep this jury-rigged deathtrap from falling apart."
