Description
The alien civilisation known as the Benefactors arrived on Earth in 1897 and shared the secrets of interstellar travel with the British Empire, assisting them with the construction of their first aetherships.

Three years later, the British have established a thriving colony on an alien world - a mysterious, purple-hued, dreamlike planet they call Xanadu.

Coleridge is their main settlement, built in and around strange mushroom-domed structures of unknown provenance. The Benefactors claim the structures were ancient when they first surveyed Xanadu thousands of years ago, yet display no signs of metal fatigue or corrosion. The domes are filled with wondrous machines as intriguing as they are perplexing; the scientists and engineers studying them can barely guess at their utility, still less their means of operation.

Here we see a British expatriate enjoying the view across the river Alph, which runs through the heart of the settlement. Since its discovery, Xanadu has attracted all manner of adventurers, traders, travellers, missionaries, scholars and explorers, as well as people who are sick of the cramped, unhealthy, squalid conditions back home - Benefactor technology has, with a sad inevitability, benefited the wealthy, privileged few more than it has ordinary people.
