Xanadu is a half-remembered dream of a planet. Narcotic scents, carnal, sensual and reverie-inducing, pour from alien blooms. A diffuse, purplish-blue radiance softens the edges of everything it touches. Strange trees and towering fungi emerge from the twilight haze. A dim, unmoving sun lights the traveller's way, its feeble rays picking out curious details in the alien landscape.

The first Victorian explorers to arrive on the planet in 1897 were mesmerised by the dreamlike, hypnagogic quality of Xanadu. Their patrons, an advanced alien civilisation known as the Benefactors, told them the planet was a reward - a token of gratitude for the British Empire's collaboration in the Benefactors' conquest of Earth.

Xanadu gives them access to valuable resources and advanced technology, which are beyond anything found on Earth. The planet is rich in exotic minerals and unique flora and fauna, many of which possess properties that hold immense scientific and economic value. But it is a poisoned chalice. Among the planet's many plant-like organisms is the purple dreamflower, porphyranthus oneiroi, which is both hallucinogenic and highly addictive. It is beginning to infiltrate the streets of London and other major cities, creating a growing class of addicts who will stop at nothing to satisfy their cravings.
