They discovered an abundance of plant-like organisms, including these innocuous-looking purple "flowers" (porphyranthus oneiroi) which can be used to create a powerful psychoactive drug that is both hallucinogenic and highly addictive. Some say it can even project the user’s mind forward or backward in time. It's illegal to import them, but that doesn't stop enterprising individuals smuggling "Xanadu dreamflowers" back to Earth.
